Batiste
A Light weight, plain woven, soft, semi-sheer fabric which resembles nainsook, but finer. It belongs to the lawn family; almost transparent. It is made of tightly twisted, combed yarns and mercerized finish. Sometimes it is printed or embroidered. |

Boucle
A type of woven or knit fabric with a looped, knotted surface. Boucle is used in lightweight and heavyweight garments, more often found in heavier weights and wools because the lofty yarns provide warmth. |

Brocade
Brocades have a rich, heavy, elaborate design effect. Sometimes with colored or metallic threads making the design usually against a satin weave background. The pattern may be satin on a twill ground or twill on a satin ground. Often reversible. The motifs may be of flowers, foliage, scrollwork, pastoral scenes, or other designs. |

Brushed
Cotton fabric, generally twill or canvas, that is light to heavily brushed to remove all excess lint and fibers from the fabric, leaving an ultra soft, smooth finish similar to suede. |

Burnout & Lasercut
Fabrics with the production of a pattern by printing with a substance that will destroy one or more of the fibers present, but not the others. Creating a burned out look. |

Canvas
A medium-to-heavyweight type of cotton or linen in a plain or twill weave. |

Chenille
Fabric made from soft, fuzzy rayon yarns that stand out around a velvety cord. |

Faille

Faux Suede
Faux suede is widely used to make clothing, shoes, bags and furniture. It is a soft, synthetic fabric made 100% polyester. The material can come in many forms, including micro suede, a microfiber. It also comes in a variety of colors and patterns. |

Flocked
A decorative detail in clothing in which raised pieces of cloth are applied to the surface in a particular pattern by using an adhesive. Generally seen with velvet. |

Jacquard
An elegant fabric with an intricate pattern that reverses itself on the flip side, woven, on a complex jacquard loom. Typically fabric can have a subtle, dull and lustrous, design and come in a variety of weights and fibers. |

Lace
An openwork fabric made by machine or by hand. The holes can be formed via removal of threads or cloth from a previously woven fabric, but more often open spaces are created as part of the lace fabric. Made from a variety of fabrics. |

Lame & Metallic
Fabric woven with pieces or entirely of metallic yarns giving is a heavy lustrous appearance. |

Linen
A textile made from the flax plant. Similar to cotton in weight variations and weaves linen is pliable fabric great for a variety of apparel. |

Mesh
A fabric generally made from synthetic fibers with a tiny holed (meshed) weave. Soft, pliable, but durable; used often for activewear. |

Moire
A corded fabric, usually made of silk, that's characterized by having a wavy, watermarked pattern on the surface also similar to tree bark. |

 |
Organza
Silk, rayon, or polyester with a plain weave. A think transparent fabric with a fine, lightweight, crisp yet wiry feel. Does not crush as well as it is pressed. |

Pique
A woven or knitted fabric usually made of cotton, rayon or silk. Mid- or heavyweight, it's characterized by raised cords, or ribs, in all-over waffle, honeycomb or diamond patterns. |

Poplin
A tightly woven, plain-weave fabric characterized by fine, crisscrossing ribs. Heavyweight and durable, poplin is usually made of cotton but can also be silk, wool or synthetic blends. Widely used in women's and men's sportswear and casual clothing. |

Any type of fabric with a printed patterned opposed to a woven one. All print methods apply to fabric. |

Quilted
Fabric with a puffy quilted layer and diamond stitch. Used generally as lining for outwear as the quilting provides an additional layer of warmth. |

Reversible
Fabric that can be used on its face or its reverse. |

Sateen
A type of fabric weave that creates a soft, smooth, lustrous surface. Applied normally to cotton and wool. |

Satin
A traditional fabric with a silky, lustrous finish. No visible pattern yielding a smooth, shiny surface. Generally made of silk but can also be found made from synthetic fibers. |

Shantung /Dupioni
Silk fabrics characterized by their slubby weave. Slubbing is a process where a piece of fiber is slightly twisted or drawn out, producing intentional unevenness for a textured appearance. |

Sheer
Lightweight fabric with a given translucency letting light through but providing still a window dressing. |

Taffeta
A midweight, plain-weave fabric with a slightly ribbed texture. Noted for its luster and crisp hand. Made primarily of silk but can be found in synthetic materials as well. |

Twill
A basic, woven fabric characterized by distinct, diagonal lines on the surface. It's very strong, yet relatively lightweight. Twill comes in a wide range of products and fibers. |

Velvet
A woven, midweight fabric made of silk, cotton or rayon. Its pile is cut and brushed for a rich, plush texture and the pile stands straight. Used for a variety of apparel. |

Voile
Fine, sheer fabric with a slightly crisp feel. Usually plain-woven of cotton, but can also be made of acetate, silk or rayon. Commonly used in curtains, women’s blouses and summer clothing. |

Woven
Fabric characterized by its unique weave or pattern. Can be made from a variety of fibers and in a variety of weights. |
