A Guide to This Season's Suiting Trends

Posted on August 9, 2021 by Greg Dugdale

Suits are always tricky to make for one's self. What fabrics are ideal? Which fit is best? There are two major silhouettes that are battling it out for the top this season: oversized vs. slim or tapered fit. Both suit types are on trend, but which one is the best for you? Here are a few tips on deciding which suit suits you!

Alternative Recommended Fabrics:

Type of Fabrics for Suiting

Depending on the season, you'll want a suit that will adapt. For a fall/winter suit, use fabrics like wool, velvet, cashmere, or heavy satin. For spring/summer, choose a suit that is lightweight and breathable like satin, tweed, silk, cotton sateen, and linen

What is Oversized?

Oversized is the one fit that doesn’t accentuate the body. Its drapes loosely on you and is more of an edgy fit. The key for wearing oversized is making sure the proportions are right, so you don’t look like the clothing is swallowing you up.

  • Breathable
  • Perfect for a hot summer day
  • Great for when you are not feeling the slimmest
  • Wide shoulder pads

  • Could be difficult for all body types
  • Too big will make you look too small

What is Slim Fit?

Slim fit is a style of clothing that eliminates excess fabric. Eliminating the excess fabric leads to a tighter fit to the body, creating more of a tapered shape.

  • Can make you feel like a million bucks!
  • Great for most body types
  • Timeless silhouette

  • Fabrics with a bit of stretch are recommended to avoid a too-tight fit
  • Fit adjustments will likely be needed regardless of pattern
