Is there anything better than a bird print twirly dress? When Mood Fabrics offered me the chance to try some fabric for my latest pattern, the Cashmerette Upton Dress, I went straight for the prints, because try as I might to be a sophisticated solids wearer, I’ll take a novelty print any day.
Naturally, these birds came calling to me at once! Combined with a navy background (my favourite), each bird is a little masterpiece, and also at a really great scale.
The fabric is a stretch cotton, while the Cashmerette Upton Dress is really intended for non-stretch wovens, but I simply used a non-stretch for the lining, and it worked fairly well. The fabric has quite a firm hand so it also has a nice amount of flare in the skirt – I used the gored skirt from view B.
I love my final dress! It’s a great quirky everyday garment for the summer, and put on a nice hat and I’m sure it would do for a garden wedding. Now, who’s inviting me?

I would use the same fabric you have. Honestly. Perfect for the dress and I am a bird lover (used many a bird print in my creations!)
I would have to make something special with this dress as it is such a flattering fit so I am having a Ralph Lauren Royal Purple Satin Faced Silk Chiffon underneath with a Deep Purple Floral Re-Embroidered Lace overskirt. Perfect for a night out.
I could not get over the awesomeness that is the Pani Gabriela Poplin from Liberty. Perfect perfect.

I would use the Italian Blue/Red Floral Cotton Batiste with some nice blue rayon voile as a lining.
I’ve got to say if there is anymore of the bird fabric available, I might just have to go for that one. I’m sure Jennifer won’t mind if her dress isn’t a OOK. Now if we get invited to the same wedding…
I have been coveting this textured red cotton woven (http://www.moodfabrics.com/poppy-red-textural-stretch-cotton-woven-310700.html) from Mood for a couple of months now, but wasn’t sure what pattern to use it for, until I saw the Upton dress! I’ve already made a double gauze Upton and a black eyelet lace Upton (which was actually a PERFECT bridesmaid dress for a wedding!), so now it’s time for a nice bright version with seasonal staying power.
If it weren’t sold out I’d like to try the warm Abstract Digitally Printed Mercerized Cotton Sateen, pattern matching and all-
Love your dress and love this print http://www.moodfabrics.com/fashion-fabrics/cotton/poplin/liberty-of-london-laura-and-alfie-stretch-cotton-poplin-307629.html
