1Another New York Comic Con has come and gone, and with it thousands of costumes. We saw 8′ worbla robots, metallic foil bodysuits, and enormous wings! The time, energy and talent that goes into creating the cosplays seen at NYCC this year was truly monumental. For those of you who couldn’t make it to the Mecca of nerdom, we’ve put together a few of our favorites from this weekend along with some helpful fabric suggestions for anyone looking to recreate these fantastic looks!
1. Awesome Wings Woman!
Unfortunately I’m starting off with a character I don’t know, but this cosplayer’s wings were absolutely stunning. I have no idea how she made it through the crowds with her 11 foot wingspan, but they were beautifully crafted with full, foot-long (and longer!) feathers.
2. Maleficent
Disney is always a great go-to for cosplay. Everyone knows who you are, and with many of the character originating as cartoons, the minimalist style leaves a lot open for interpretation. I just love this cosplayers choice to go with a faux leather for Maleficent’s outfit. It gives her the perfect villainesque look.
3. Ninetales?
This cosplayer looked absolutely stunning. Sadly, I didn’t get a chance to confirm that her ensemble was based off the Pokemon ninetales, but her craftmanship stands out regardless!
4. Captain America
It is Comic-Con, right? In addition to Disney and video game characters, there were plenty of costume straight from the comic pages; and Captain America will always be a fan favorite, I think. Even though you can purchase a suit at your local Party City, I love when a cosplayer takes the extra steps to make it themselves. The result feels more authentic!
5. Vaporeon
Cosplaying humanized animals or inanimate objects has been huge recently, particularly in relation to Pokemon! This stylized Vaporeon is absolutely lovely, and I adore the dancer vibe it gives off.
6. Marvel Heroes
Lights, capes, armor! You’ll see no shortage of these at any convention – especially NYCC. When it comes to Thor’s look above, his armor can be easily recreated with faux leather. It ‘s metallic and structural, but still flexible and comfy.
7. King George
Comics not your thing? We saw a few theater cosplays around the convention center, but this Hamilton reference blew us all away. (Hah!) She stayed in character the entire time, and her accent was spot on.
8.Effie Trinket
Sadly, it would be difficult to recreate this amazing dress with fabrics, but Mood has plenty of crafting supplies to help out! A muslin sheath dress would be perfect, and a ton of fabric glue would definitely be your best friend for a project like this.
9. Harley Quinn
With the recent release of Suicide Squad, NYCC was absolutely swarmed with Harley Quinns, and while we love her movie design, it’s also fantastic to see other iterations of her!
10. T-1000
Throwback cosplays are terrific. This cosplay referencing the villain from terminator 2 was expertly crafted with striped painted up the sides of the pants, a vintage-looking police jacket, and a foil sword-hand (which would look amazing with Mood’s new imitation latex).
11. Firelord Azula
While detailed interpretations of cartoon characters are cool to see, classic recreations can look just as amazing. This Firelord Azula looks like she stepped right out of an Avatar: The Last Airbender episode.
12. Skull Kid & Tael
This Skull Kid is absolutely spot on, straight down to the shoes. I was beyond impressed by this humanized Tael though. Her beautiful tulle dress and mesh wings paired with the fake flowers really gave off the perfect air you would associate with Tael.
13. Cersei Lannister
Sure, we saw lots of Game of thrones cosplayers, but this Cersei slayed – both with her eyes and her dress.
14. Daenerys Targaryen
This Daenerys cosplayer’s choice to use a tweed fabric to make it look a little distressed was a fantastic design choice. A few strips of leather and faux suede truly brought the look together.
15. This Kid.
I’ll be honest, I’m not entirely sure what this little girl is supposed to be, but it doesn’t make her any less adorable! Her felt costume looked absolutely amazing’ it kept it’s shape and volume with no problems!

Hey Mood! I’m Tael! Thanks so much for the feature. I got most of my materials for my costume and skull kid’s from you so this is really awesome! My favorite piece is the bodice which I made from a gorgeous iridescent chiffon I found in your store. Thank you!!
That’s fantastic! Your costume looked absolutely amazing – I wish we had time to get more detailed photos of it!
I’m so happy to have been in the article regardless! I am disappointed that my favorite part of the costume isn’t obvious in any of the pictures because the convention center is very bright during the day, but inside the skirt there’s about 40 feet of LED lighting set against orange rayon to give she skirt that purple/orange glow Tael has. The wig and the corset also both have about 6 feet of LED lights, and the shoes also have lights under the leaves so that they glow in the dark. Unfortunately pictures don’t do it justice!
