For the first time ever in the United States, Balenciaga fabric will be sold exclusively at Mood! Since 2015, the high-end fashion house has been under the creative direction of Demna Gvasalia. Known for his motifs of oversized, baggy tailoring and luxe streetwear ensembles (purposefully ironic), Gvasalia has taken the fashion world by storm. Often adorned by celebrities such as Kanye West, Kim Kardashian and Hailey Bieber, Balenciaga’s bold prints and courageous silhouettes stand out in the fast consumer culture of the modern world. Mood’s exclusive Balenciaga fabric line is the ideal opportunity for anyone to take inspiration from the fresh perspective of Gvasalia. Channel your inner celebrity and design a luxurious look that would leave mouths gaping along the red carpet.

Balenciaga Italian Multicolor Magazine Collage Polyester Jacquard
This polyester jacquard by Balenciaga is certainly newsworthy! This eye-catching fabric was spotted on Cardi B, simply fashioned into a single breasted, wrap jacket. Dressed for the occasion, Cardi wore the statement piece to the Balenciaga Paris fashion week show in October 2021. Not only was her now-ex-husband walking down the runway, but Cardi was the face of the fashion house’s 2020 winter campaign. She styled the bold print with black accessories: pointed stilletos, opera gloves, and massive, avant-garde hat. The simple accessories allowed the focus to remain on the detailed jacket; the magazine headlines are emotive. While some express “love is love,” many focus on the subject of climate change. It is no surprise that Demna Gvasalia would include such a print in his collection; he is constantly grappling with the anxiety of climate change, most noticeably in his Fall 2020 Ready-to-Wear collection. Although Cardi wore this fabric as a jacket, it would be just as bold when fashioned into an oversized pantsuit or chunky t-shirt dress.

Balenciaga Italian Pink, Yellow, Mint Floral Nylon Woven
Although Balenciaga shows can often be dark, there are always glimpses of bright colors and feminine touches that stand out. One of these fabrics is the Balenciaga Italian Pink, Yellow, Mint Floral Nylon Woven which was fashioned into a high-neck, puffer jacket. While the fashion house used this nylon for a winter look, it is multi-seasonal; create a gorgeous maxi dress for a warm-weather look! Floral is often cast away as intrinsically feminine, but Gvasalia would never say this fabric would not look fantastic on anyone. He claims that his designs are genderless. Rather than upholding the binary gender structure within the fashion industry, Gvasalia simply designs clothes for anyone who loves fashion. So don’t shy away from feminine fabrics! Embrace whatever style is true to you.

Balenciaga Italian Navy Nylon Satin Faced Twill & Italian Yellow, Green and Black Lemon Bubbles and Herbs Stretch Viscose Jersey
As previously stated, Gvasalia has drawn attention to the urgency of the climate crisis, and fast fashion’s blame, throughout his career at Balenciaga. The Fall 2020 Ready-to-Wear runway was flooded. In fact, the first three rows of seating were slightly submerged in water. To further dramatize the runway, the ceiling of LED lights imitated a haunting storm. While the first 14 garments that appeared were all-black – mimicking the bleak future – the 15th look was constructed with this Italian navy nylon satin faced twill. The silky material shimmered down the runway as a high-neck, loose-fitted evening dress. But, this fabric isn’t necessarily only for special occasions; embrace trendy streetwear style and use this twill to create a luxury puffer jacket. The first pop of color was followed soon after by an equally stunning dress made with the Italian Lemon Bubbles and Herbs Stretch Viscose Jersey. The bright yellow stood out against the dark runway, emphasizing the genuine beauty of nature. Perfect for flowy dresses, stand out anytime of the year in lemon and herb tones.

Balenciaga Italian Meteorite and White Alyssum Happy News Cotton Poplin
Newspaper printed fabric as a fashion staple is not new. The Dior newspaper dress donned by Carrie Bradshaw in 2000 remains one of the most iconic looks from Sex and the City. Before Dior, there was Schiaparelli and Versace. But, in the modern day with daunting news bombarding our screens seemingly every minute, a glimpse of good news is a breath of fresh air to everyone. While headlines jump out of the fabric, small print and close reading forces us to slow down. In the Resort 2021 collection, this cotton poplin was fashioned into an oversized puffer jacket, a sleek gown, and a simple button-down. While all remain great everyday options for your next sewing project, there is no doubt this fabric would look stunning as a tie-neck blouse or slip maxi skirt. All options would make a great discussion piece!
