F/W 2020-21 looks like it’s cooking up to be full of trends that are sure to peak everyone’s interest in one way or another. Some of your favorite fashion moments and some of your not-so-loved ones are back, but in reinvented ways. Think mid-century, embracing your imperfections, and otherworldly vibes full of vibrant prints and colors. From a slip dress paired with stylized pieces to colors and prints that are quite literally out of this world and unlike the weather outside, the trend forecast is coming in HOT and HEAVY!
Slip Dresses
Slip dresses are posted up and will remain a hot ticket item this coming season. Choose slip dresses in ranging lengths from mini to full length, finished with trims galore like lace or appliques. Layer it up with your favorite blazer or turn up the style dial by wearing bottoms to peek out from beneath it!
Keep it silky smooth with the help of silky soft fabrics like polyester, rayon, or vegan fabric like our cupro that won’t affect your budget.
Slouchy & Oversized Fits
Stay comfy no matter the occasion with baggy bottoms like cargo pants, oversized coats (parkas and puffers for the win), sleeves and collars in extended lengths, and exaggerated details like *drumroll please* oversized pockets (we all know that they make everything better). I know I’m a huge fan of garments that are comfy AND stylish and above all, layerable for the brisk months. Don’t worry— details like high-waists, tapered cuffs, and fitted sleeves will be there to help tailor your look.
Mixed Media
It’s playtime— time to play with contrasting texture, fabrics, and trims. Multiple types of fabrics with a lot of extras, the more the merrier! Mix faux fabrics with denim, cotton, or polyester (or all of the above) and top it all off with feathers, fur, and more! Add interest to your garments and remember— more is more!! Mixed media will be featured in outerwear, so add faux leather lapels to your overcoat or experiment with different types of faux furs.
Earth Tones
Stay grounded with rich, earthy tones like truly clay-based terracotta, brown tones perfect for base layering and rich green hues that make the perfect companion for neutrals. These earthy tones are perfect for introducing pops of wild color while still remaining understated to achieve that soft and polished look we all secretly want during the months when we are actually anything but that.
Anything type of fabric goes for these earth tones— opt for a rib-knit or a shiny fabric to add a bit of edge to your look or even put a little sparkle in it to shine bright in otherwise muted and understated tones!
Space Theme
It’s okay to dress out of this world, this upcoming season will demand it! Get ready for blast-off with exaggerated silhouettes equipped with strong shoulders, oversized fits, and slick or shiny materials to really channel the sci-fi side of things. Think digital prints like techno grids, graphics full of intergalactic goodness and other futuristic things full of vibrant color.
Compression fabrics, glossy materials, neon colors, and details like alien patches are sure to bend this trend in your favor. Feel free to get expressive with it!
Overcoats
The overcoat is still here and it’s number one on our must-have list for this F/W. Push it to the top of your sewing list ASAP! You’ll see them in oversized varieties, with strong shoulders, and in long lengths to keep the cold out and the warmth in! If you’re looking for a luxurious option then a robe style overcoat will check all the boxes!
Consider making outerwear in a heavy fabric like canvas, wool, or in a lustrous material like brocade with a fleece lining to offer a bit of warmth during the cold temperatures. Add exposed zippers for those oversized pockets and faux fur around the collar!
Knife Pleats
Whether you fancy a full-on pleated garment or subtle pleated detail, pleats are in for fall! Opt for a skirt with a midi hemline and a full shape or a blouse complete with pleated sleeves. Fill your closet to the brim with pleated pieces to add dimension and a little bit of sophisticated, yet flirty fun to any occasion!
Silky Materials
Play this trend to your strengths so that you’re looking and feeling as sleek and shiny as the fabric you’re wearing! Wraps tops, midi skirts, slip dresses, and duster type overcoats are all perfect contenders for wearing silky materials! Style the silky look any way you want.
Shiny Surfaces
When you think of shiny you may think of sparkles or glitter but what if the new shiny is sleek and pleathery? With the use of shiny fabrics on the rise, you can shine in whatever way appeals most to you. There’s no need to choose. A glossy mini skirt with a high rise will pair perfectly with your favorite chunky sweater and a puffer jacket with a liquid sheen will keep you warm, dry, and fiercely stylish!
Artistic Abstract and Dye Effects
Put it in print— dye effects are sure to sweep the fashion scene along with abstract art displays. Your favorite new statement girlfriend jeans were made for walking so that they can be seen everywhere! Abstract prints in all varieties are fit for conversation and great for adding interest to an otherwise simple silhouette.
You could argue that tye-dye expanded in a sense, experiencing a cross between graffiti and color-dipped beauty. You can find it in denim, compression fabrics, cotton and loads of fabrics in between.
Fashion month is fast approaching and these are our predictions. I know I’m pumped that the overcoat is here to stay and I’m totally here for the slouchy and oversized fits so that I can stay warm, look cute and still keep it comfortable!
