If there’s one thing we learned from the Fall/Winter fashion shows, it’s that it’s time for a new coat. Preferably a little oversized and in a soft pastel color. Keep the lines simple and you can make a new coat in a weekend. Scroll down for Mood’s fabric suggestions and some pattern suggestions as well.

Clockwise from top left: ivory sweater knit coating; Missoni-like soft coating; lime wool coating; Jill Stuart lavender wool coating

Clockwise from top left: nautical blue camel hair coating; Marc Jacobs pink wool coating; yellow brushed wool cashmere; sherbet wool coating.
Pattern suggestions: If you want really oversized (see Carven), then head to Etsy and search 1980s coat patterns. I’m in love with an early ’90s Vogue Pattern—2692—for a coat that’s loose but not too voluminous and sews up fast. Other oversized but not overwhelming coat patterns are:
Vogue 8860, 8933
Butterick 5822, 5960, 5823
New Look 6153
BurdaStyle 7020, 7177
Now get sewing that new coat!

Love the pastel fabrics you’ve posted. It’s just hard to wrap my head around light colored coats for the fall/winter seasons but the designers are slowly gaining on my “mature” thoughts.
I am looking for winter white cashmere and wool blend for a winter dress coat. haven’t found anything I like in designer or off the rack items. Thought I could make the style I want myself. Do you have any suggestions in finding the fabric I’m looking for? Thank you
Hi Mona, try looking here for fabric: http://www.moodfabrics.com/fashion-fabrics/wool/coating.html?main_color=9
