Strolling through rows of stands and tables at a farmers’ market marveling at the fresh produce and delicious baked goods grown locally is pure fun, bringing serotonin levels to an all-time high, if you enjoy that kind of thing, that is. I’ve always noticed a difference in the farmers’ market life, but it hadn’t occurred to me how to describe the look until it became a fashion trend for the season—The season of farmers’ markets!

Mixing cottagecore with a bit of coastal grandmother aesthetics—Farmers’ market style is a bit of both with the addition of conscious clothing choices and a mind aware of how to dress both trendy and responsibly. This style is laid back, fashion-forward, and a little quirky. Designers have started making nods to the style by adding more food prints to their garments and accessories in recent seasons.

To bring the look full circle—Pair your outfit with a basket bag or a crochet tote and some sensible flats or other comfy walking shoes. The combination of personal style and food found at the farmers’ market is both inviting and fun. This aesthetic is where simple joys of life and being out in person again come together. Instead of wearing eye-catching looks, this aesthetic is more about the feeling that comes about from wearing laid-back styles that are easy to put on and make the experience of a Sunday morning market run so appealing.
If you’re not into wearing fruit-filled baskets and fresh pastries on your clothes, I understand. Perhaps you enjoy the farmers’ market experience without wearing specialty prints to fit in. A trip to a farmers’ market looks slightly different depending on the location but the overarching theme is the feeling that exudes from strolling around to gather local, organic produce, plants, and other goods like the handmade garden décor.

This is where the coastal grandmother style meets farmers’ market attire. A trip to a farmers’ market is definitely on the to-do list for a coastal grandmother, and the outfit she would wear is pretty easy to predict. Since the coastal grandmother aesthetic is also about ease and comfort, options for a dialed-back farmers’ market look are a tiered dress, wide-leg pants, flowy tops, and shirt dresses accompanied by a tote to hold your produce.
Keep your look simple and true to your style, whether you fancy sporting a baguette on a belted summer dress or would much prefer a collared shirt with pull-on pants complete with touches like pulled-back hair and walking shoes. There is a right way to attend a farmers’ market this summer, and the secret is to keep the style simple and true to your liking.

Stains are hard to remove from natural fabrics. Carry a cloth napkin – you’ve made yourself -to complement your style and colours – something that doesn’t look dawky when you drape across shoulders and lap at café or restaurant. If it gets dirty, throw it into a plastic bag or waxed paper and stuff it in the tote for laundering. Worth it to save clothing.
Great tips!
