As we enter a new year, many ponder what it will have in store. The fashion community needs to know what will be hot and what won’t, prompting the question: Which styles will be big in 2022? Research and a little intuition can help, but I do know that the sweatpants and loungewear of 2021 are long gone, and that alone will drive a lot of trends. Looking at Pinterest and recent trends, these trend predictions will keep you designing ahead of the masses. We’ve seen a recent push towards more responsible purchasing, but also a more maximal style, which I think is sure to continue this year.
Without further adieu, here are my top 5 trend predictions for 2022:
Polished Punk
For those awaiting the resurgence of punk to be welcomed back into mainstream fashion, your time to shine is here. Think edgy with a fashionably polished twist. The baseline is to create outfits with chic styles in darker tones paired with chunky boots and leather. More specifically, checkerboard and plaid prints are a must and a safe bet for those that want to dip their toe into a different style.
Loungerie
Sweats are canceled, but the cozy feel they provide is not. This trend combines the comfort of loungewear and the sex appeal of lingerie to bring a hot new take on comfy clothes. For now, loungerie is largely meant to be worn at home, but it probably won’t be long before the recent lingerie styles and loungerie meet in the streets. Check out the party pjs post to get some inspiration for this trend. You’ll need your satin pjs, a long silky robe, and some fun slip gowns for this one!
Happy Clothes
Fashion trends to be one big juxtaposition at times, and the trend predictions back that up. While one trend nods to the darker color spectrum, this trend is the opposite. Joyful dressing is something society needs to boost morale. After recent tragedies that continue to affect us, the least we can do is dress to make ourselves happy. Go for bold colors and patterns. Color mixing has never been this inclusive, so no matter which colors you choose, you’re sure to hit the right mark. Embrace the “no rules in fashion” mantra and get adventurous.
Size Matters
Sure, I made this trend title an innuendo, but life is more fun that way. Trending silhouettes are smaller and larger than ever. Pick your favs: statement sleeves, big jackets, flowy oversized shirts, and trousers or micro-mini dresses, skirts that bare major legs, and blazers that are fitted and getting shorter. Whether you are a “bigger is better”, or “less is more” person this year, that doesn’t matter because you’re right either way. What a time to be alive.
Low Rise Bottoms
The runways warned us that the rise of our waistband was getting lower, and they didn’t lie. With baggy Y2K jeans and their current popularity, it only makes sense to keep them in their original low-rise form, but the low rise doesn’t stop there. Expect to see it transcend to all bottoms, including skirts and trousers.
Trends on Repeat
Expect to see a continuation of several trends from the past year, including but not limited to regency core inspired styles like the corset top. With the anticipated release of Bridgerton season two, the regency core style is sure to have another moment. Bra tops are here to stay, and you can wear them anywhere. Yes, the gym, home, and even work (or work-inspired outfits, perhaps). Lastly, cutouts continue to pop up, and this year, expect them in unexpected places like a crossbody, at the neckline, and even cut-out catsuits (which are also trending, so this is your heads up).
What a lineup of trends! Continuing with a recent pattern seen in fashion, these predictions include a wide range of options that suit many style needs and wants. Fashion continues to evolve, and so do the trends for this year. Now it’s your turn to do some predictions. What are some trending styles you expect to see this year? Sound off in a comment below!
