How to sew the Saylor High-Waisted Pants:
1- Pin and sew at center front of both front sides, starting from the top and down toward the crotch.
2- Repeat this step with the two back pieces, but sew with a loose stitch to create a basting stitch. This will allow you to go back later and install the zipper at center back.
3- Prepare the pockets by marking and pressing the seam allowance. Sew 1/4″ along the edges to keep the seam allowance down in place.
4- Make marks on the front of the pants to indicate the seam allowance. Pin and sew along the edges of the pockets to the front of the pants.
5- Sew the two darts at the back of the pants.
6- Some might find it easier to hem the pieces before putting them together. Mark 1″ seam allowance at the bottom of the pant legs and sew.
7- Once the front and back are ready, pin and sew them together along the side seams, right sides together.
8- After both sides seams are closed, sew the inseam starting from one leg across to the other leg.
9- Create the waistband by sewing the two back pieces to the ends of the front piece.
10- Attach the waistband to the top of the pants and sew.
11- Remove some of the basting stitches at center back and evenly place the zipper to both sides. Here is a quick tutorial on how to install a zipper.
12- Create the shoulder straps by folding them in half right sides together, sew along the edge 1/2″, then turn right sides out.
13- Place the shoulder straps onto the waistband, sew two at the front and two at the back, then tie at the shoulder.
14- Finally, use tailor’s chalk to mark the locations of the buttons. Thread a needle and sew the buttons onto the pants.

Hi ! I really like this new pattern ! can we have a look at the back please. It seems to fit so well the model ! thank you
Hello, we have added a back view on step 11 of the blog post
Hi! Beginner here! Just wondering why you don’t install the zipper right away instead of adding the basting stitch? I see this is a common thing in most patterns so I guess I was curious if there’s a reason for waiting to install the zipper? Thanks 🙂
Hi,
The reason why a basting stitch is used at first is to determine whether the zipper was installed evenly and both sides match up properly. If it is uneven, you can go back and adjust. If it looks good, just stitch over with a regular stitch
Hi,
Made this as normal pant, without the band, absolutely love this, will make it again, Will cut it a bit longer next time, as I feel it is on the short side, and I’m not tall 1.68m.
love all your patterns, made a couple of thins already.
I love these pants! I want to make a skirt with this waistband, how could I turn this into a skirt pattern?
Hello, you can possibly use the pattern for this waistband and apply it to one of our free skirt patterns
Hi I absolutely love this ! Is there also a pattern for the top? love to make the hole set
Hello, the pattern for the top is The Calendula Blouse
This is the cutest pant I’ve seen in a long time!! My hesitation is darts- any suggestions? Thank you!!
Hello, an easy way to darts is by using tracing paper or tailor’s chalk to mark the dart onto the wrong side of the fabric. Fold over the dart and guide yourself with the tracing to sew the dart.
Hey,do I have to add the straps or would it stay up on your hips by itself?
When will you be adding the A0 (large format) version to your pdfs? If we don’t have a large format printer, patterns are easily sent to an ‘Office Depot’ type shop and printed on a full sheet for cheaper than using my paper and ink. And, I don’t anyone like to tape…. just sayin
