From blanket scarves to ponchos to a versatile infinity scarf, we’ll show you how easy it is to transform a bit of fabric into a wearable accessory this fall. Before we start, each of these scarves has a decorative raw edge – which means no hemming necessary! Let’s take a look at how to do that with flannel.
Gently use a pin to pick one or two threads horizontal threads along an edge. Carefully pull the threads out of the weave along the entire length of the edge. Repeat until your frayed edge is your desired height. For extra security, you can choose to baste above the fray to keep the fabric from fraying further.
How to Make a Blanket Scarf Poncho
Blanket ponchos are so cozy and they instantly elevate your entire look. Style this one with a sleek pair of black jeans and heeled boots and add a chunky belt to make it even more sophisticated!
- Fold your fabric in half to match the graphic to the right and cut up the center of one of your layers
- Fray all the edges
- Optional: Top-stitch a decorative clasp 10″ from the top of the “neckline”

How to Make a Blanket Scarf
This scarf is probably the easiest of the three options here. There’s no sewing necessary! Simply cut your flannel into a perfect square and fray the edges. A 54″ square will give your a delightfully oversized vibe, but you can easily go down to 36″ for a smaller version. Fold the square in half like a triangle to wear.

How to Make an Infinity Scarf
Fold your yard of fabric in half so the 36″ edges are along the side, fabric face out. Sew along the 36″ edge using a French seam. Fray the top and bottom edges and wear! I recommend wearing the scarf in two layers, with one layer pulled up as a hood like below!
Alternatively, if you’d like a longer infinity scarf, try 2 yards of fabric. Cut a 25″ to 30″ by 72″ panel, with the intent to sew along the 25″/30″ edge (so keep directional prints in mind here when shopping). Because most fabrics are 55″+ wide, you’ll be able to get two infinity scarves from two yards of fabric this way!
