Masks—We wear them to keep ourselves and others safe. Using a disposable mask in a pinch is effective, but by now most of us have chosen our favorite reusable mask by trying out a few or by making our own. If you make your own, you’re most likely to obtain that perfect fit through trial and error, but what if we can take out some of the guesswork? This post is all about creating that perfect fit through the creation of adjustable masks.
Right away, I’ll get the two options out of the way that I mentioned in my previous mask post.

Button Extender
Not only will this option keep your mask from irritating your ears, but it will also create adjustable loops. Measure out a strip of rectangular fabric and attach a button (or buttons) on either end. Add a strip of fabric around the back of your neck and secure it in place using the loops on the mask. This option is easy and customizable from the length to the fabric and buttons chosen.

Tie Back Mask
A tie-back mask is ideal for comfort and adjustability. This mask offers a variety of ties that wrap around the back of the head, allowing the wearer to make it as small or large as needed. A big bonus is that this option is also perfect for those that have to wear their masks for extended periods since it does not rub the back of the ear. To make ties with your mask fabric, try a loop turner or bias tape maker!

Beaded Elastic
For those that enjoy the fit that a mask with elastic loops brings, a simple adjustment like adding a bead with a stopper is a quick way to make sure that any crafted or bought mask is going to fit snugly to the ears. If the elastic is too small, consider stretching it or removing the elastic and adding a larger strand next time.

Loop Slider
An adjustable strap is what makes a cami or bikini top so adaptable. Adding a bra slider to your mask can be done in several ways including around the ear loops, which would be fabric instead of elastic or by creating a mask that wraps around the head and can be fitted once it’s properly placed.

Sewn in Loop
Create a small loop at the bottom corners of the mask to and sew a free-hanging string from the top half. The top hanging strings can be easily threaded through the bottom loops and tied off to any length. Cut off the excess string or tuck it in your mask to change the length as needed.

Wearing a mask isn’t fun, but it’s necessary, so let’s make the most of it. Take some time to let the kids add their adjustable beads or make tie back masks together. Exploring all of your mask options will likely make them a little better to wear and more effective in the long run. I hope you enjoyed these tips!

Great ideas! Thanks for posting. Please remember that masks should be a minimum of three layers of fabric to offer protection to you and to those around you. Stay safe and stay healthy!
