Cross waist leggings took TikTok by storm last month, and now they’ve sold out virtually everywhere. Not to worry though; you can still add them to your workout or loungewear wardrobe with a few simple tweaks to one of our basic free sewing patterns! All seam allowances are 1/2″ unless otherwise stated. See chart below for sizing specifications. Note, this specific pattern is available up to a size 22.

To change up the original Ixia waistband, begin by printing two of the waistband pattern piece.
One piece gets no alterations to the shape, although you now 1 one singular instead of on the fold. This will be the back waistband.
On the second piece, mark inward 1/2″ from the top left corner. Do the same upward from the bottom right corner. Use a straight edge to connect the two marks. This angled edge becomes the new fold line of your fabric, (I recommend folding your fabric along the bias) and you’ll cut 2 of this new piece on the fold.
Connect each of the new front waistband pieces on either side of your back waistband at the side seams. Fold the waistband in half along the length and overlap the front panels. The overlap should go 1/2″ past the side seams.

Create the rest of your leggings according to the original directions and attach your brand new waistband for an elevated look!

Thanks for this tutorial! Are you sure the new angled line should be cut on the fold? I thought this piece should be a single cut, just like the back piece is now a single cut. Could you explain why it should be cut on the fold?
Hi, Kim! That fold becomes the top edge of the waistband when the waistband is folded in half and attached to your leggings. 🙂
Hi – similar to Kim’s question – would you cut the 1 waistband piece on the fold on the long side? I am struggling to understand why the triangular piece would be cut on the fold but the back piece would not be? Since you have to fold waistband in half wouldn’t the back piece be shorter than the front? Thanks in advance for any help! Really looking qorward to trying this!
Hi, Meg! The original waistband is already drafted to be folded in half, whereas the new piece is created by cutting that piece in half and moving the new fold to be on the diagonal. 🙂
Thank you for a quick response! Just made these using the same fabric as above. Very comfortable!
Any chance there will be a pattern for the shrug? 🙂
You can download the Gordonia Hoodie here. 🙂
Do you we have elastic band for the waist here?
Hi, Leo! We didn’t add elastic to the waistband, since the fabric has great stretch and recovery as-is. But you’re welcome to add some if you want!
