The upcoming trends for fall are full of a little something for every taste. In this post, we’re covering six types of must-have pieces for the season ahead and putting you on the fast track with free sewing patterns to sew each trend. I’m sprinkling in tips and tricks on how to kick each style up a notch. Head over to your sewing machine and gather your sketchbook, fabric, and shears and get to work so that your closet is ready for fall!
Suit up with a jumpsuit or a boiler suit (whichever rings your style bell). This transeasonal piece is a superhero staple for fall. Jumpsuits are one-piece outfit wonders, and the boiler suit is the epitome of functionality and fashion. Boiler suits bring utilitarianism to the forefront, offering lots of space, room for movement, and pockets galore for tons of storage.
The Forrest Jumpsuit comes complete with a belt, consider lengthening it by double and add a buckle to capture the essence of the boiler suit, and don’t forget to add oversized pockets— lots of them! Grab a contrasting thread color to complete the utility look, and you’ll be ready to seize the day no matter what it throws at you.

Dresses are about to be everyone’s cup of tea this fall, offering various options for all tastes. Midi dresses are another transeasonal piece that can work from warm to cooler temps. Midi dresses this year are perfect for wearing during the day, then layering with a jacket or coat when the temp drops. Long sleeves in a chiffon material are ideal for the first weeks of summer fading into fall. Choose a full or slim fit and have fun creating the rest.
The Yarrow Dress is the perfect way to wear two trends at once–double the trends equals double the style, am I right?. Create the Poinsettia Dress as a slip and sew the Yarrow Dress. The Cypress Dress is another option that’s as easy as adding length to your pattern, and then you’re good to go. If a bodycon midi is more your style, the Citrus Dress is the perfect one for you, just add inches to the hemline for that midi length.

The power of the turtleneck is still large and in charge, and it’s going to be a must-have in your fall wardrobe. Your collection can be as minimal or maximal as you like, but keep in mind that extra ruching around the sleeve and neck will keep you cozy when its cold, a full turtleneck or a mock neck are both trending, and a rib-knit is the perfect choice for a turtleneck top.
It’s perfect as a base layer for under blazers or slip dresses. Use the Felicia Sweater to make a basic turtleneck. The Almond Bodysuit is another turtleneck alternative, feel free to skip the bodysuit portion if you’re not a fan. Another option is the Davallia Bodysuit, which will give you the high neck look with the addition of strong sleeves, which are going to be a must this fall.

Getting straight to the point, straight-legged pants with a high-rise are hot, and perhaps they’re even trendier than ever. Add embellishments, pick fabric in a bold color, and roll with the punches. Trousers with room to move your limbs are a blessing, and I know I’ll be taking advantage of the straight leg trend this fall and seasons to come.
Use Mood’s free sewing patterns to make the Nasrin or Primrose pants. Opt for button flies, add front pintucks, and leave the hem unfinished for a classic and rigid look. You’ll probably live in your straight-legged creation once you’ve perfected the sizing and details that suit you best.
It doesn’t get much cooler than culottes for fall. These high waisted and wide-legged beauties are a win for all body types and come in many forms. You may call them cropped pants, culottes, pedal pushers, or bermudas, and you’re bound to love the versatility that they offer.
The Aster Pants and the Maple Culottes redux are two variations of culottes in different lengths. The cropped version of the Aster Pants would also look incredible with a pleat front detail for extra fullness.
The Maple Culottes

The ultimate feminist fashion item, first gaining momentum in the 1500s, and then again in the Victorian era — culottes are an article of clothing that afforded women the freedom to play sports and live their most active lives without the restraint of a skirt or dress. Download it here!

I’m in love with the over-sized patch pockets, and the back faux welt pockets add such a stylish detail. I didn’t have to worry about front pleats or darts that can sometimes look bulky. Download it here!

Thank you for your great commentary and good ideas about using the patterns. I am excited to use some of your suggestions. Do you know of a good double breasted blazer pattern. I am looking for one.
Hi Angela! Unfortunately we don’t have a double breasted blazer pattern exactly, but we do have a double breasted blazer dress that you might be able to alter! 🙂
