Will you be giving a fashionable overhaul to the Hydrus pattern? Let me know in the comments below!
Each winter, I’m constantly torn between fashion and comfort. With temperatures dropping rapidly, it’s just too easy to grab the giant, insulated coat to stay warm against the elements. Sadly though, that throws style out the window. My goal is for this year to be different. With Mood’s cozy warm boiled wool and their arsenal of free outerwear patterns, I refuse to let the weather dampen my wardrobe every again. Slimming and stylish, I chose with the Hydrus Coat for this project. Originally meant to be a cosplay pattern, this Chesterfield silhouette oozes comfy elegance when paired with the right fabric. Follow suit in a boiled wool of your own, or opt for one of Mood’s many other coating options!

Purchase Materials Used Below:
- 3 yards Adobe Brown Boiled Wool
- 3 yards Italian Almond Stretch Polyester Charmeuse
- 1/2 yard Brown Fashion-Weight Faux Leather
- 2 Brown Nylon Snaps – 50L/32mm
- MDF100 – The Hydrus Cosplay Sewing Pattern (free download below!)
All seam allowances are 1/2″ unless otherwise stated. See chart below for sizing specifications. Note, this specific pattern is available up to a size 30.

Every time I make a garment using one of the Mood free sewing patterns, I try to switch things up a bit to see how I can alter the pattern. This time around though, I hardly had to change a thing!
The only alterations I did were to the belt and the pockets. As you can tell, I skipped the belt and belt loops altogether for a much more streamlined silhouette. For the pockets, I printed out the originals with the rest of the pattern, but I cut the corners for a rounder look and I love the slightly vintage vibe that it brings to the coat!

I finished the project off with some sew-on snaps rather than cover buttons, and the result is a comfy, cozy, and totally chic new winter coat!

I don’t see any sewing instructions. I have printed the pattern and pieced that together. Now
how do I put the fabric pieces together?
Hi Cindy! You can find the instructions for this pattern here.
I love the simplicity of this pattern and this redux is fab, especially the rounded pockets! Do you think this would work in a brocade?
Yes, I think that would be stunning!
merci

What the difference between this and the cosplay version?
Hi Emma! This coat was made out of a different fabric, with alterations to the belt and pockets. 😀
