How To Sew the Jolie Sweep Dress
The instructions provided are designed to guide you through sewing the Jolie Sweep Dress.
Sew with a 1/2″ seam allowance for all seams unless otherwise specified.
7 Tips for Sewing with Silk Crepe de Chine
[Tip #1] Use a Microtex or Sharp Needle: Silk Crepe de Chine is delicate and prone to snagging. A size 60/8 or 70/10 Microtex needle will glide through the fabric without leaving visible holes.
[Tip #2] Cut with Tissue or a Rotary Cutter: To prevent shifting, lay silk between layers of tissue paper/ pattern paper when cutting or use a rotary cutter on a self-healing mat for extra precision.
[Tip #3] Handle with Clean, Dry Hands: Oils and moisture can easily stain silk. Always wash your hands before handling, or wear clean cotton gloves for extra care.
[Tip #4] Use a Fine, Short Stitch Length: Set your machine to a short stitch (2.0–2.5 mm) to avoid puckering and create smooth seams.
[Tip #5] Stabilize with Spray Starch or Interfacing: Lightly mist the fabric with spray starch or use lightweight fusible interfacing in areas that need extra structure, like necklines or button plackets.
[Tip #6] Pin Sparingly—or Use Clips: Use fine silk pins and place them within the seam allowance. For more delicate projects, try using fabric clips to avoid holes.
[Tip #7] Practice French Seams or Narrow Hems: French seams and baby hems keep the fabric from fraying and give your garment a couture-quality finish.
Step 1
Transfer Important Markings:
- Take your invisible zipper and line it up with the side seam on the back piece. Mark where the zipper ends on the pattern, and transfer this marking to one side of the fabric.
- Use the pattern to mark the notch where the front piece attaches to the back piece.
- Mark the seam allowance at the top of the back piece, as this is where the front notch and the back will align for sewing.
4. Mark the darts onto the fabric using marking paper and a tracing wheel or marking it with a chalk pencil or tailor’s chalk. Make sure to mark both darts.
Step 2
Sewing the Darts:
- Pin along the marked darts using pins, making sure the pins go through the lines on both sides of the fabric.
- Sew the darts in place by using a reverse stitch to secure it at the raw edge, and then follow the line until the stitch tapers off of the fabric—leave the threads long enough to hand tie the threads together—do not backstitch.
Step 3
Sewing the Dress Pieces Together:
- Sew the front and back pieces right sides together with half an inch seam allowance.
- When sewing the side with the zipper, use a basting stitch from the top of the seam until you reach the mark where the zipper will end. Then switch back to a regular stitch, secure it with a reverse stitch, and continue to sew the seam normally.
- Press all of your seams open, and press the darts away from the center front of the garment.
- Once the seams are pressed open, use a seam ripper to remove the basting stitches where the invisible zipper should go.
Step 4
Inserting the Invisible Zipper:
- Replace the regular sewing foot with an invisible zipper foot.
- Pin one side of the invisible zipper to the fabric, making sure the zipper teeth are close to the fold and the top and bottom are aligned to the fabric.
- Sew the pinned side to the fabric using the invisible zipper foot.
- Repeat all the steps for the other side of the invisible zipper, and press the zipper.
Step 5
Creating the Ruffle:
- Sew the two ruffle pieces with the right sides together at the sides and bottom hem, which should be longer than the top hem.
- Clip the sharp corners of the seam allowances to make turning the corners out cleaner.
- Turn the ruffle right side out and press it.
Step 6
Creating the Adjustable Straps:
- Fold all of the pieces in half, putting the raw edges together, and sew ⅜ of an inch away from the fold.
- Sew one side of each sewn tube of fabric closed, and then use a loop turner to turn the strap pieces right side out. Press the strap pieces with an iron.
- Loop each small strap piece through one side of a metal slider. Pull ½ of an inch of the strap through the slider and stitch it down ¼ inch from the slider. Both pieces should look like this after:
- Loop each large strap piece through another metal slider through both openings of the slider, pulling 1 inch of the strap through and sewing down ½ inch away from the slider.
- Lay one small strap piece and one large strap piece with the right sides facing up, and loop the raw end of the large piece up from underneath the open part of the slider attached to the small strap piece, as shown below:
- Pull the large strap all the way through this opening and re-loop it through both openings of the other metal slider, as shown below:
- Pull through until the slider is secured along the strap.
Step 7
Attaching the Ruffle and Straps to the Dress:
- Take your ruffle piece and sew a ¼ inch from the top raw edge, and leave loose threads on each end.
- Pull the bottom thread only and gather the ruffle to slightly gather it together to make fitting it to the main garment easier.
- Turn the garment right side out.
- With the right side of the straps facing up, pin the raw end on the longer piece to the top of the garment on the wrong side of the fabric.
- Pin the raw end of the shorter piece of the strap to the wrong side of the fabric, approximately 2-3 inches above the side seam/zipper.
- Pin the raw edge of the ruffle to the main dress on the wrong side of the fabric, encasing the straps between the two fabrics.
- Fit the ruffle to the main dress by occasionally pleating the fabric 1 inch. Space these 1 inch pleats out approximately 5-6 inches apart.
- Sew along the raw edges, leaving a ½ inch seam allowance.
- Cut ¼ inch of the seam allowance away to reduce bulk
- Flip the ruffle over to encase the raw edges and lightly press it in place to complete the ruffle.
Step 8
Hemming the Dress:
A ½” seam allowance is built into this pattern for the hem; this provides flexibility to create different types of hems.
Beginner Option, pictured below:
- Fold over the edges of the raw hem two times up toward the wrong side of the fabric. (We folded over about ⅜” two times, equating to a slightly larger hem, using ¾” of fabric.) Press after each fold, then pin your hem in place.
- Sew along the top of the hem with a straight stitch.
- Press the hem flat.
Baby Hem or Narrow Double Hem:
- Mark a line that is slightly wider than your desired finished hem. (e.g., 1/8″ or 1/4″)
- Carefully press the raw fabric up toward the wrong side of the fabric along the marked line.
- Sew a straight stitch very close to the folded edge, about 1/16” from the fold. Use a short stitch length (1.5mm – 2mm).
- Carefully trim away the excess fabric—very close to the stitched line, using sharp scissors. Do not cut into your stitches!
- Fold the hem up again, rolling the raw edge (now secured by your stitch line) to the wrong side of the fabric. (The stitch line will be hidden within the fold.) Press.
- Sew a second straight stitch along the new folded edge—very close to the folded edge, about 1/16”.
- Press the finished hem flat from the wrong side, using a press cloth.
Serged Hem:
- Serge along the raw edges, using a normal stitch length (2.5-3mm); or sew a zig-zag stitch if you do not have a serger.
- Fold the serged edge up toward the wrong side of the fabric (once time), at your desired hem depth.
- Using your regular sewing machine, use a straight stitch to sew the serged edge into place.
