The ‘New Year, New You’ season is coming and Mood’s free sewing patterns are the perfect thing for getting yourself (and your wardrobe) in shape! Since an abundance of New Year’s resolutions seem to be about exercising, I thought I’d try out another take on The Lotus Leggings. Unlike the monochrome originals, this version takes full advantage of Mood’s vast array of tricot prints and activewear fabrics; and while these paneled leggings may seem complicated, their deceivingly simple design makes this workout gear project no sweat!

Fabrics & materials used:
- 1 yard Orange and Blue Python UV Protective Compression Tricot with Aloe Vera Microcapsules
- 1/2 yard Black High Compression PowerNet Mesh
- 1/2 yard New Teal Stretch Eclon Jersey
- MDF039 – The Lotus Leggings Sewing Pattern (free download below!)
All seam allowances are 1/2″ unless otherwise stated. See chart below for sizing specifications. Note, this specific pattern is available up to a size 30. For full instructions, please visit the original post here!

I made a few alterations to the original pattern, one of which being and additional panel along the shin. To try this change on your own, simply draw a diagonal line along the Lower Front Panel, cut the pattern piece, and be sure to add seam allowance along each of those new edges when you cut out your fabric. It’s that easy!

The other change I made this time around was a simple addition: using two 1″ strips of teal jersey, I added some piping along the outer seams of the leggings. I cut the strips along the width of the fabric, making them much longer than needed, and trimmed them down to size once they were sewn into the seams. When attaching the front and back of the legs, all I needed to do was fold the strip in half to make it 1″ across and sandwich it in between the front and back panels.

Have you made your own Lotus Leggings yet, or are you considering them as a future project? Tell me about your fabric combinations in the comments!

Love the leggings, will make them soon.
I’m gonna try my hand at making leggings. It’ll be a first for me, excited!
I want to try making these. Just a question. Do you need elastic in the waist? Or is the compression fabric sturdy enough to stay up on its own?
Hi there! The compression fabric has a nice weight to it, so I skipped the elastic in the waistband. It stays up on its own and is was more comfy!
I hate to sound like I do not know what I am doing but I downloaded the pattern but there are no instructions that I see – are there any or are they somewhere else – or am I on my own……Just getting back to doing fashion sewing after several years of quilting. Stopped sewing when the kids went to college after doing prom gowns and clothing for them over the years. I am ordering the same fabric and trying the piping also. Please let me know. I am not a novice but trying to get back in the groove.
Hi there! The instructions are the original post, which you can find here.
since the original pattern has pleats at the knees would you adjust for this one without and how did you do that?
