Everyone needs a cute holiday outfit for those inevitable cookouts this weekend, even the little ones! This skirt is full, bouncy, and terrific to spin and run around in. Plus, it’s easily washable!
Things you’ll need:
- 1/2 yard Dark Midnight Star Blended Cotton Chambray
- 3/4 yard Red/White/Blue Stars Combed Cotton Poplin
- 1/2 yard lining
- 2 yards 1.5″ Garnet Double Face French Satin Ribbon
The cotton chambray should be cut into a rectangle 3x wider than your child’s waist, and as long as you’d like the skirt to be. The lining should be 2x your child’s waist, and about 3″ shorter than the chambray.
Begin by cutting your cotton poplin into 4 strips, each about 6″ wide by the length of your fabric. Since this star poplin is 55″ wide, my cuts were about 6″x55″. Sew them together at each end so you’re left with one incredibly long, 6″ wide strip.
Here is where you’ll make what I like to call ‘the super ruffle.’ When it comes to gathering all this fabric, you have two options.
First, you could fold your strip of fabric in half, with wrong sides together and sew a wide baste stitch along the rough edge. Then pull the end of the thread to bunch up the fabric. This gives perfectly even ruffles every time, but you do run the risk of breaking your thread and having to start over.
The other option is to manually pin the fabric down at steady intervals. This tends to take a while, but it’s my favorite way to do it. Once you’re happy with the size and placement of your ruffles, sew the to the bottom of the right side of your lining, like you see above. They should fold down, hiding the seam inside the skirt.
The waistband gets attached almost the exact same way, but this one folds up. Be sure to attach the center of your ribbon to the center front of your skirt so you’re ties will remain even. I kept the ribbon fairly long on this skirt so it can wrap around the waist twice to tie in the front. How cute!

That is adorable! I would have never thought to put those two prints together, but it is perfection!!
