Give your shoes a designer edge this season! Bows and lace-up ribbons have been a huge trend on heels, especially at Gucci. Rather than kill your wallet, why not make bows in every color for a fraction of the cost? This project took fifteen minutes and didn’t require any sewing whatsoever. Simple and chic, my favorite kind of DIY.
Fabrics & materials used:
- Snap Plier Kit (I used the 5/8″ size.)
- 2 yards 1.5″ Evergreen Double Face Satin Ribbon
- 1 yard per shoe, cut as follows:
- One 10-12″ piece to fit around your shoe/foot
- One 10″ piece, tapered at the end to become the loops of the bow
- One 4″ piece, tapered at ends to wrap around loops
- Two 4″ pieces, tapered and angled to become tails
- 1 yard per shoe, cut as follows:
1. Fold your tapered 10″ strip, like below, to create the bow loops.
2. Wrap the loops with your tapered 4″ piece, hiding the overlap toward the back of the bow.
3. Add the tails at whichever angle you’d like. I’ve seen some cute ones that have them stick straight out, and others that point downward. I went for something in the middle.
4. Pin the longest piece (to wrap around your shoe) to the back of the bow. Make sure to have one extending from the left side of the bow, and the other extending from the right, making them symmetrical when they’re on opposite shoes.
5. Punch a hole through all layers of ribbon and follow the plier kit instructions to add a snap to the center front of your project.
6. Measure the circumference of your foot and shoe. Fold the excess ribbon over a few times, like below, until it measures about 1/2″ longer than your circumference measurement.
7. The extra folds makes it a little more stable for adding the other half of your snap.
8. Add it to your shoes and make your holiday ensemble truly complete!
If your ribbons shift around a bit, there are a few things you can do to make them feel more secure. An easy fix is always Body Tape. A strip or two on the back holds them up without issue. More permanently, you can glue the ribbons to the bottom of your shoes, or add some sticky back Velcro!
What color are you going to make yours? I’d love to hear your plans in the comments!
