Weddings are filled with tradition and special moments to make your own, so why not take that a step further? There are a ton of ways to make your bridal look more unique, but creating your own garter is one of the quickest and easiest! This post will walk you through the making of this beautiful accessory, designed and sewn by Stephanie Espinal.
The first step is to create a casing for your elastic. Cut your satin ribbon to about 3-6" more, and the elastic 1-2" less, than the circumference of your thigh. For the casing, fold the ribbon in half and stitch along the open edge. This can then be turned right-side out, and the elastic will go inside, like you can see in the photo above. Sew the edges of your elastic together before stitching the casing closed.
Next, cut 1 yard each of the lace and feather edge ribbon. Baste the ribbon down the middle of the lace, and pull one of the threads to ruche it. The lace should be gathered to the same length as the satin casing, and then hand-stitched on.
The last step is embellishment! This is where you can make your garter uniquely yours. For this one above, an ostrich feather was cut down and sewn on, along with a 25mm Swarovski crystal button. What would you add to yours? We'd love to see what you create!
