The season of harvest festivals is upon us, and what better way to attend than in a new dress featuring some festive greenery. Just in time, Mood is launching The Jacques Collection, their very own exclusive line, presenting stunning new sateen, voile, and poplin prints. Of course, they were all absolutely perfect for the design I had in mind and positively impossible to narrow down to a favorite.
I went with one of the stretch sateens, which has a soft hand and a great amount of stretch. It’s slightly opaque, so anything more tailored might require a lining, but since this dress sort of features two skirts, I skipped a lining and instead went for a contrast underskirt.
Fabrics & materials used:
- 4 yards Mood Exclusive Panier de Fruits Yellow and Green Stretch Cotton Sateen
- 2.5 yards Contrast Cotton Poplin or Shirting
- 1 pkg Antique Brass Grommets
- Italian Ivory Coconut Buckle
This dress was draped right on a dress form, but it’s remarkably similar to Butterick B4790. The one I made is slightly shorter and includes two deep darts along the front bodice, which gives it a slight origami feel.
My favorite part of this dress is definitely the skirt underneath that peaks out when the wearer walks or twirls. This is where you can easily alter the aesthetic of the dress. While I went with a sage color that can comfortably transition through different seasons, you could choose a vibrant yellow or orange to bring the dress into the summer more, or even go with one of the deeper reds seen in areas of the print for a more autumn feel.
The underskirt and front bodice ties in the back, while the overskirt clasps in the front with two sew-in snaps. The finishing touch was a chunky belt at the waist to truly tie in the retro vibe I was feeling with this design. I love the mod look of the coconut (organic!) belt buckle I found.
Looking at the rest of Mood’s new line is sending my mind into full-on design mode. I can’t wait to create more with all of the gorgeous new prints. Take a look for yourself, and tell me what ideas you have in mind!
