Although some of fashion’s biggest names were missing from this season’s setlist, NYFW still packed a punch. With a mix of dopamine dressing and neutral-based looks, there was a beautiful balance found on the runways in New York, over the past week. From “the revenge dress” worn by Julia Fox to a moment of silence dedicated to the recent passing of fashion icon, Andre Leon Talley, NYFW did not disappoint and was full of styles worth taking a second look at.
Styles
A trend that we will continue to see this upcoming fall is suiting. The power suit is unstoppable, featuring sharp shoulders and oversized fits. Accessories like big belts were paired with outerwear, cinching apparel that is typically somewhat unflattering. Large blanket scarves, shawls, and headpieces come together to create warmth and protection from the cold. Skirts in maxi and midi lengths, in different fabrics and styles, showed up on runways like Ulla Johnson. With accents like pleats and tons of tiers, the mantra seemed to be the more material, the better. Regency-era clothing inspired by the show Bridgerton made its return. Silhouettes with strong shoulders, corset tops, high necks, and the popular puff sleeve seem to be around every corner. However, there’s always a twist, and for a/w ‘22, shoulders are on show, and it’s captivating.
Fabrics
Leather, denim, and faux fur accents were standout fabrics for the upcoming season. Starting with leather- styles of trusty biker jackets, trenches, midi skirts, and edgy high-waisted trousers stormed the runways. Denim looked more luxe than ever in wide-leg varieties and premium washes, styled with elegant high-sheen tops and feathery shawls. Faux fur played a game of peek-a-boo as it showed up on the lapels and cuffs of outerwear, accessories, and in some cases- classic shirts.
Colors
Pantone set the colors, and the designers ran with the colors for the autumn season. Very Peri made many appearances, from slip dresses to sheer tulle gowns. Rose violet, a vivid pink, was paired with gorgeous gowns and sequined body con dresses. On a deeper note, midnight blue, which looks like a dark evening sky, was sewn into regency-inspired dresses and gorgeous quilted longline outerwear. Other colors worth noting include lava falls—a fiery red, and orange tiger—a bright and bold orange.
From sexy hemlines to extravagant necklines, colors representing both ends of the spectrum, and killer designs, NYFW certainly started fashion month off with a bang and set the stage for what’s to come.
