As the summer air starts to cool down and autumn slowly encroaches, first noticeable in the crisp chill on a dark August evening, and then in the fresh morning air that quivers on the brink of a temperature change, it’s time to start thinking about moving from shorts and skirts to pants. What will your everyday office look be, and how can you transition into more casual attire? Should you go high waisted or low rising? Let’s take a look at the basics of pant silhouettes.
Bodies are complex, so in order to find the best pair of pants for your body, you have to do pant math. There are two main parts of the pant: the waist, and the silhouette. So, the equation is waist height + pant silhouette = pants that make you look as amazing as you know you are.
There are four types of waists that pants can have; low rise, medium, high and super high. Obviously, their names are quite apt, as they refer to how high or low the waist is. Low rise jeans are best for those who have short, petite body types. Medium rise is good for a curvy body. High rise is great for long bodies, while super high jeans are perfect for those looking to lengthen their legs.
There are also four types of pant silhouettes. They can go by a variety of names, but typically they are the cigarette, the boot cut, the flare and the wide leg. Cigarette pants are prime for hourglass shapes, or athletic body types. Boot-cut pants are great for rectangular body shapes, and so are flared pants. Wide-leg pants are ideal for curvy women, those with the fruit shapes like apple, pear, guava, pineapple (some of these are a joke), because they elongate the silhouette. They’re also very good for inverted triangles, as it add volume to the bottom, which even out the body proportions.
Here, Christian Siriano uses a beautiful pair of high-waisted, flare pants that accentuate the shape of the plus-size model.
These medium-rise cigarette pants from Brock Collection fill out the model’s hips, while elongating her legs.
These super high-waisted, wide-leg pants from Theory are an excellent example of the leg lengthening powers of high-waisted pants.
Redemption’s medium-rise, boot-cut pants hug the legs of the model without gripping them, pretty much going straight down from the knee.

The truth of the matter is, it’s not about your body shape but what you feel comfortable in and what fits your style. If you’re a petite pear partial to low rise cigarette pants, you go out and get yourself some low rise cigarette pants.
What’s your body shape, and your go-to pant style? I’m definitely a high-waisted pants kind of girl, but I go between cigarette and wide-leg pants. Let me know in the comments!
