While the April showers seem to be overstaying their welcome, spring is in full swing, and summer is fast approaching, so what does this mean for fashion? It’s time to talk about what’s hot: popular prints edition. First things first- animal prints are still popular (so continue to rock your reptile and leopard print), but the only fresh and fun new take on animal print this season is the return of the zebra print, which is being represented in a very lifelike way. Now, onto the trends that are ready for their spotlight moment.

Polka Dots
Polka dots are timeless, a little retro and easy to wear even if you remain on the less daring side of fashion, and this season they’re getting a revamp that’s subdued and a bit less bold especially compared to last season. Think gentle dots with simple silhouettes that feature a bold structural accent, like accentuated sleeves or an asymmetric construction hemline. Challenge the polka dot status quo by choosing different sized dots to create a unique midi dress that stands out or opt for a co-ord black and white polka dot combo for a more classic look.

Tropical
Tropical prints (like this silk charmeuse one) are perfect for vacay time, but there’s no need to be bummed if your plans have been altered. This season’s take on tropical prints will take you to an exotic island far away, featuring bright and bold jungles complete with broad palm leaves, sensational hibiscus flowers, and fresh fruit intertwined into one gorgeous landscape without having to leave the house. Choose voile or crepe de chine for tropical prints that will flow effortlessly in the wind as you make your backyard your catwalk.

Dye Effects
Tie dye is getting a fun and fresh moment this season. Swirled or painterly type effects are everywhere, from pants to tops, dresses, accessories, and more. This print can take several forms, resembling smudges, paint stains, or hydro dipping. This print rests on the fence between looking intentional and a bit haphazard, which puts traditional tie dye to rest. Find dye effects in bright or muted colorways. Dye effects are popping up on structured fabric denim pieces like wide-legged pants and jackets or even fabrics with an excellent drape like silk charmeuse.

In true spring and summer style, florals offer variety for every taste in fashion. An overarching theme for this year is dainty florals. They come in vintage arrays that are blooming in soft or more stark colorways with white or pastel backgrounds. On the S/S runways, designers took a chance and adopted oriental florals into their prints. Another way florals are being presented is through delicate colors and whimsical arrangements that appear almost sketched on. Opt for a fabric with a flowy drape like chiffon and choose a pattern like sweeping kaftans and long flowing dresses or skirts. A traditional take on florals is seen through botanical gardens of beauty that appear on full-length gowns.

Checks
Another noteworthy print always on the fashion scene is checked print, whether it’s in the form of gingham, tartan, or plaid. Make your new go-to dress with plaid. It’ll be perfect for wearing around the house or out for a quick grocery run. Opt for summer fabrics that are light and airy with bright colorways (like chambray, linen, cotton, etc.) like the bright pink dress by Ulla Johnson pictured below.
Old favorites are finding new light this season, and this is exactly the kind of prints we all know and love for the hot summer months with a few tasteful changes to the patterns to elevate them from one year to the next. I am extremely excited for all of the floral prints options and the painterly prints. I love variety, and I love a fresh take on an old concept even more. Which popular print is your favorite, and what print are you dying to get your hands on to sew with?
