Are you looking for the perfect easy piece to add to your vacation wardrobe? Well I have just the dress for you! This classic shift dress has all the right details. From the boat neck, to the raised waist and sew on flaps, this dress will have you feeling comfy and chic in no time!! Nothing screams resort wear like a good horizontal stripe!
Here’s what I used:
Burda Style Issue 5/2016 Pattern 105 Shift Dress
Fabric:
- Stretch Cotton Sateen 2.5yd for size 36- US 4-6
- Gray Fusible Woven Cotton Stiffener 1/2 yd
- Bone 24″ Invisible Zipper
Although Burda Style patterns may be a bit more difficult to understand in terms of instruction, this pattern is a quick and easy sew. In addition, this Burda pattern was specifically made for stripes, and is featured in their “Super Stripes” section of their May, 2016 issue.
I personally love the look of a clean stripe with an interesting color way. When I saw this beautiful Mood Fabrics Exclusive cotton satin stripe, I had to get some! This fabric has a creamy light ground with stripes that pop in green, rust, mustard, and olive. Visually it’s Sooooooo good! The hand is smooth and soft, and the fabric has plenty of stretch.
Stripes can be a little intimidating when sewing. However, it’s all about keeping an eye on how and where you place your pattern pieces before you cut. The good thing is this pattern has stripe placement markings to help guide you. Take your time and you’ll match up those stripes just right!
The darts at front, and faux pocket flaps breakup the stripes in a very interesting way. And yes, there’s real pockets too!
Such a simple clean classic dress allows room for you to go wild with accessories! All of my lovely accessories shown are from www.sassaries.com
Enjoy!

Lovely dress and fabric. The background for your scenery is AWESOME!!!
Thank you very much!
Wishing I had bought this issue – a number of patterns I like in it but I couldn’t get hold of it at the time. Loved the stripe collection, and this dress looks lovely on you
Hi Ann,
Yes they have great patterns in this issue! Thank you so much!
I absolutely love this and the fact that you are styling now. You are amazing!
Thank you so much Resa! 🙂
Mmmhmm
So so lovely. You did an amazing job.
I love this dress although I think I would have used the stripes vertically or asymetrically, then made the pocket flaps horizontal (as you have). I find the whole dress in horizontal stripe is a little confusing to the eye, particularly around the waistline, and goes against the fashion rule of creating a slim/long illusion. This fabric would also look lovely as a kaftan (vertical stripes of course).
INDEED RESORT READY!
