I’m so excited about this blog post! I’m going to show you how I was inspired by the colors of Balenciaga’s Spring 2017 Ready to Wear Collection. There were strong, bold silhouettes and vibrant colors. The turquoise, pink, and purple really caught my attention. I was in love with the use of these colors together.
My mind started to quickly drift towards the 60’s fashion era. I’ve always admired women’s bold sense of style during this time. I knew I had to use these colors to revamp my own take on a stylish 60’s outfit. Next, I quickly drew up a sketch to get a feel for what I wanted to create. I love the short capelet look. I paired this little wool jacket with a nice comfy turtle neck, and a pair a slimming 60’s style pants.
Here’s what I used:
- Fabric
- Pink Carnation Double- Faced Stretch Wool Twill
- Sky Blue Stretch Rayon Jersey
- Sparkling Grape Stretch Cotton Sateen
- Winter White and Black Polka Dotted Polyester Lining
- Maxant Button Cover Kit
First let’s talk about this cute little capelet jacket. I drafted this jacket right on the dress form. There was a particular shape I was looking for so I just draped it until I achieved just what I wanted. Here’s a quick little tip: I use crafting felt when I drape my coats and jackets that I’m making out of wool. It’s very inexpensive and it has the proper weight/bulk for me to actually see how the coat is going to fit. I made a this style with a portrait collar and flared sleeve. I added large 1 1/2″ self covered buttons. To complete the look, I finished the inside with a really cute novelty black & winter white and polka dot lining. It really pulled the looked together! Here’s a little picture tutorial below on how I covered the buttons.
For the turtle neck I used this yummy, soft solid sky blue stretch rayon. The body was very simple. I was able to draft a pattern using one of my t-shirts. This added the pop of blue I needed to recreate the runway look.
As for the slim pants, I used this really pretty grape cotton sateen. I made these pants with a super high waist and shortened them to ankle length. The pattern is a basic straight leg pattern with the normal front and back darts. I finished them with a side invisible zip.
Hope you’ve enjoyed! 🙂
