I have a difficult relationship with shorts. On the one hand, they’re adorable. On the other, I’m a plus size woman with relatively high standards and for some reason, no plus size store in my area can make shorts for plus size women! Like, they have them, I see them, and then I try them on and look in the mirror and I’m appalled. Do I really look like that? Why are these so long and tight? Why are they so loose on my butt? No, I’m beautiful and plus size stores fall short of that (pun intended).
When I first saw the Sage Shorts, those beautifully ruffled shorts that look fabulous on the ever so lovely Brittany, I laughed. I was like there’s no way I can rock those. But I had to try, can you blame me? I chose a wonderful polyester velvet from September’s Swatch Club and went to work.
Fabrics & materials used:
- 2 Yards Pacific Blue Polyester Velvet
- 2 Yards .25″ White Elastic
- 1 Package Gold Eyelets
- The Sage Shorts Sewing Pattern (free download below!)

As you can see, they’re amazing! Once again, Mood has created a pattern that all sizes can wear and rock! They’re so cute and super comfortable, and they were way easier to put together than I thought. Since I was working with velvet, when cutting out the pattern I just needed to make sure the nap was facing the same way throughout, and use a lot of pins once I started sewing.
Easy to sew, easy to wear, easy to style, the Sage Shorts are ideal for any body type and every style. You like to look cool and casual? Pair these shorts with a basic tee shirt. You like looking more put together and in charge? Throw on a lazy crop top and some heels. A little nervous because you’re plus size and don’t think you have the body for these shorts? Pair them with confidence and wear them like the goddess you are.
What would you make the Sage Shorts out of? Let me know in the comments!

Thank you for sharing and caring for the plus size people I love this page
I love to represent my plus size sisters!
You Go Girls…you are Beautiful!
and you do it well! thank you im going to try to make these but with linen .
Be careful with linen…..when you sit it will wrinkle and if it should get just a smidge hot, when it wrinkles it will wrinkle right up the back.and those wrinkles don’t come out except with a hot iron. Linen with poly might be a safer choice.
I love the top also is there a pattern for it also?
Thank you for reading! We don’t have a pattern for that top, but our Tornenia Blouse features a similar sleeve. Use chiffon for the bottom part of the sleeve, and instead of closing it with a tie, you can add a cuff.
