Mood’s new Calypso Jacket gives off some serious Moschino FW18 vibes and I don’t think I could possibly love it more. While the original view has a classic 1960’s Jackie O/Barbie Girl thing happening, I wanted to try my hand at bringing a more 90’s aesthetic to it. So, after playing around with some rainbow quilted coating and colorful rib knit, we have the Alternative Cut of the Calypso Jacket. It’s the perfect jacket for rollerskating through a the park on a crisp December afternoon or for catching a game in your team’s colors!
Moschino Fall 2018 Ready-to-Wear
Fabrics & materials used:
- 1 yard Rainbow Quilted Polyester Woven
- 1 yard Sunflower Solid Boiled Wool
- 2 Mysterioso Purple Heavy Rib Knit Trim
- 1 pkg Brass/Black Heavy Duty Snaps
- 2.5″ Black Buckle
- Black Separating Plastic Molded Zipper
- MDF099 – The Calypso Sewing Pattern (free download below!)
All seam allowances are 1/2″ unless otherwise stated. See chart below for sizing specifications. Note, this specific pattern is available up to a size 30.
For the most part, this pattern will follow the original steps, but luckily you won’t need quite as much fabric. For this cut, you’ll only need the following pattern pieces:
- CENTER FRONT TOP PANEL, Cut 2 of Coating Fabric and Contrast
- SIDE FRONT TOP PANEL, Cut 2 of Coating Fabric and Lining
- BACK TOP PANEL, Cut 1 on fold of Coating Fabric and Lining
- SLEEVE UPPER, Cut 2 of Contrast and Lining
- SLEEVE LOWER, Cut 2 of Contrast and Lining
- BELT, Cut 2 of Contrast
- COLLAR, Cut 1 of Coating Fabric and Contrast
This shortened version calls for a few extra pieces as well: 1 or 2 rib knit trim pieces and 4 rectangles measuring 2″x4″.
Skipping the lower skirt panels and the pockets, follow the pattern instructions until you’re ready to insert your zipper. Add a flat piece of rib knit to the bottom of the center front top panel that will house the zipper along the curved side.
Next, cut another piece of rib knit to the same length of your waist measurement. Pin it to the remainder of your jacket waistband, gathering the bottom of your jacket evenly into the trim.
Form your four belt loops and sandwich them in between your rib knit and jacket, one along each side front and two along the back. Sew the waistband and belt loops to the jacket. Hand-stitch the bottom of your belt loops into place and continue on sewing the garment regularly, stitching the lining over your rib knit trim as you finish your jacket.
Pockets! How can we put pockets in this version?
You could try some side seam pockets! This tutorial shows how to put them in the side seams of a skirt, but the theory is the same. 🙂
