As we (slowly) move towards Spring, transition pieces are starting to become key again and vests are the perfect thing. The Harrisia Vest gives off an edgy moto vibe and contours to your body for a comfy fit that can instantly turn a simple outfit into a statement look. Whether you’re ready to go for a run, attend a game, or simply layer up this season, this free pattern is sure to be a superb new addition to your library. For the best fit, try it with one of Mood’s new quilted outerwear fabrics!
Fabrics & materials used:
- 1 yard Black Faux Leather Quilted Coating with Large Squares
- 1 yard Black Faux Leather Diamond Quilted Coating
- 1 H. Old Gold Rib Knit Trim
- 1 Separating Zipper
- MDF026 – The Harrisia Vest Sewing Pattern (free download below!)
Please note, this pattern now includes a 1/2″ seam allowance.
Start by sewing the side panels of your vest to the each of the front panels along the curved seam.
Push your seam allowance toward the side panel and edge-stitch it into place, like below.
The left side of your vest is in two pieces to make room for the zipper. Sew them, faces together, with the zipper sandwiched in between and stopping about 1/2″ from the bottom of your fabric.
Add the shoulder panels to the top of each front panel and stitch down the seam allowances.
Add the yoke to the back panel of your vest and attach the front and back at the shoulders.
Connect the sides with a strip of rib knit trim. Here is where you can fit your vest a little better if need be. Sew the front sides together and stitch the seam allowances, and then sew the back sides and take in the seam if you’d like a slimmer fit.
Next, take one of your collar pieces and sew the bottom edge to the neckline of your vest, faces together. Take the second piece and place place it against the first with their right sides together. Stitch along the top edge, fold it right side out and fold all raw edges inward. Top-stitch around the sides and bottom edge of the collar, securing the raw edges inside.
Add the other half of the zipper to the opposite front panel and finish up your vest with a rolled hem along the bottom and armholes!
Which of Mood’s new quilted coatings will you be using for yours? I’d love to hear how you’ll be trying out this new pattern!

How long should it take to receive a link for the download? Is this working?
I filled out the form on Saturday and still have not received an email (and it’s not in junk folder either). I’d really like to sew this one.
Hi there! I just resent it – let me know if you’ve received it now! 🙂
Hi Courtney, This is my third time trying to reach you to get an answer. I noticed you responded to another post regarding another free pattern. I was asking about a possible mistake in the pattern on this vest and just trying to get some help. Are you the pattern drafter? If not, could you please forward my question to that person? I would really appreciate it. If you don’t know the answer then just say so. That’s all I need. Thanks for your help, Carol Cansdale
Hi Carol! I don’t see any other messages from you. What’s the issue you’re running into?
Hi Courtney, Thanks for replying. I’m having trouble with the shoulder piece, which has no notches. It should connect to each of the right front and the left front A & B pieces which are connected with a zipper. When the left front A and B are connected with the zipper, the resulting part that should connect to the shoulder piece is not the same measurement as it’s counterpart on the right front. I’m just wondering I’m missing out on something? Is there a separate right and left shoulder piece? Without notches it’s hard to tell which end connects to the back yoke and which connects to the fronts. I’ve double checked that I traced the correct size and I’m using 1/2 inch seams, which is indicated. Is there a possible error? Has the 1/2 inch seam allowance been added to all pieces before printing? Thanks for any help you can provide. Carol Cansdale
Hi again, and I deeply apologize! It looks like you’re correct and there is an error. When you cut the shoulder piece to insert the zipper, you’ll need to add seam allowance along that cut. I’ll add that into the post – Thank you so much for the catch!
OK Thanks! I appreciate your help!

I love this design! What a great look. Thanks for the pattern!
Love the Vest! Love the hat! Did you make the hat also? If so, where did you get the pattern?
Thanks! 🙂 Sadly, no – the hat is BCBG.
Thank you very much for this pattern! What a great looking vest! Hope I can do it justice.
All the patterns are so cute and modern – I wish the downloads were layered PDFs
Thank you so much for providing us with free patterns, you have no idea how much they help me as a home sewer. Thank you Mood so much.
I’m pretty amateur when it comes to sewing so I’m still learning, but I found some parts of the pattern either incorrect or confusing. When using the size 16 measurements I found that the collar was not long enough unless I significantly reduced the size of the shoulder pieces. I’m also confused about the front left side piece because it doesn’t match up with the curve of front left piece. The steps are a bit unclear. I wish there were notches to show where pieces are supposed to line up. Other than that the design itself is amazing! I get lots of compliments on my vests. Most people assume they are something I bought, not made.
