There are plenty of great ways to renew and freshen up your wardrobe. One of my favorite ways to do this is by revamping a pattern I simply love! I’m already familiar with how to sew it, so whipping up a new and improved version should be a snap. I’m going to show you how I used Mood Fabrics’ Lantana Maxi Shirt free pattern, to create the perfect springtime dress. With just a few small additions like pockets, sleeve tabs, and the most incredible linen ever, you’ll have a new favorite dress in no time! Try making your version in a beautiful tencel or chambray for breezy summer look.
Purchase Materials Used Below:
- 4 yards of Tivoli White Linen and Rayon Woven
- 16 pc of Italian White Plastic 4-hole Buttons
- MDF163 – The Lantana Shirt Dress Sewing Pattern (free download below!)
All seam allowances are 1/2″ unless otherwise stated. See chart below for sizing specifications. Note, this specific pattern is available up to a size 30.
Here’s how to make the pattern adjustments:
After I cut out all of the original pattern pieces, I began to draft the new pattern update pieces.
- First I extended the sleeve about 7″ and added the seam allowance where it was needed.
- Next, I made a simple patch pocket pattern to be worn on the front of the dress (one on each side). My pocket measured about 5″ across and 6.5″ down. I added 1″ at the top for folding over and 1/2″ seam allowance all around.
- The last pattern piece I made was for the sleeve tab. It measured 3/4″x 4 1/4″. For this small piece, I only added 1/4″ seam allowance all around.
That’s it! Easy breezy! I would suggest making a muslin sample first before cutting your actual fabric. This way you can customize your fit and adjustments specific to your liking!

Hi,
Is this dress totally open in the front of the skirt or this a panel of fabric ? It’s difficult to determine from the line drawing.
Thank you.
Hi Kathy, it buttons down the front if you’d like it to. You can see more details and sewing instructions here.
