How To Sew The Margaux Bodycon Dress Free Sewing Pattern:
Use a 1/2″ seam allowance for all seams unless otherwise specified.
Tips for sewing with Ponte knit – *50% all-way stretch. (62% Rayon, 32% Nylon, 6% Spandex)
- Use a ballpoint needle or a stretch needle in the size range of 75/11 to 90/14.
- Use a stretch stitch or a zigzag stitch to help maintain the elasticity of the fabric.
- For stitch length, a medium length of about 2.5 to 3.5mm gives enough stretch in the seams without causing puckering.
- Using an overlock stitch will trim the edges and encase them, preventing fraying while allowing the fabric to retain its stretch.
- If you don’t have a serger, you can use a zigzag stitch along the raw edges.
Step 1
Pin and sew the armhole straps to the front of the dress. Leave 1/2″ seam allowance open at the front to hem the neckline.
Step 2
Sew front and back together at the shoulder seams.
Step 3
Sew front and back together along the side seams.
Step 4
Close the sleeves by sewing the inseam.
Step 5
Sew a basting stitch 1/4″ around the sleeve cap to gather slightly.
Step 6
Set in the sleeve to the armhole and sew all around.
Step 7
Finish the raw edges at the neckline, the sleeves, and the bottom of the dress with a 1/4″ double-folded hem.

Do you have any suggestions for a full bust adjustment. I know it’s stretch but that can only go so far – so for a 40Ebust
For this specific dress, you can cut and spread the front piece (A) at the top line forming a dart shape from the underbust level to the neckline, don’t close the dart and this will create more space at the bust. If you need more assistance, feel free to send an email to sandy@moodfabrics.com.
Beautiful pattern
are your patterns a good fit or do you have to adjust a lot yourself?
Hello, this pattern is designed with a good fit and easy-to-follow instructions for a smooth sewing experience.
It won’t let me just print my size. the lines are all black and close. it is very confusing without the ability to print the one size.
Hello, In order to keep our free sewing patterns free, we are exclusively offering an A4-Letter size version that includes all sizes. Please use the “size line key” to follow the correct size you are cutting out.
Ive printed the A4 pattern, there doesnt seem to be size 14 on it
Hello, we apologize for this mistake as we have updated the pattern file.
Oh what a beautiful and simple dress pattern , I bought similar fabric only last year from moods fabric .
Thank you for sharing the pattern
We are glad to hear that you are still able to put that fabric to good use and enjoy creating this beautiful dress! Happy sewing 🙂
Hi, what is the height of your model? I would like to know how much to adjust for a petite size (5 feet height).
Thanks.
Hello, the photographed model is 5’10 ft. For standard measurements reduce 1″ the shoulder-waist length, 1″ the waist hip length, and 8″ the hem line
I saw a dress similar to this and I was wondering how to make it. Perfect timing!
That sounds wonderful, we are very happy to hear 🙂 Happy sewing!
I’m in love with this pattern, and think it will look lovely in black velvet But I’ll be making size 22/24, and midi length. I was wondering how much more fabric I would need?
Hello, for a size 22/24 you will need 3.5 yards of stretch fabric.
Thank you for sharing this pattern is amazing ,i love the neckline ,made in to a top that i adore ,will be making the dress soon ,thank you again ❤️
Sounds so beautiful, we are happy to hear you are enjoying our free patterns!
Sorry to be that person, but if I wanted to try this with a woven fabric do you think it would work to size up one or two sizes and add a zipper, or is it too figure-hugging? I love the pattern sooo much but have no knits on hand!
Hello, making this pattern with woven fabric can also work as we suggest to look over the size chart and choose the size that has measurements 1″ bigger than your actual size.
Hi, just a quick note to let you know something here is a bit confusing. In your instructions the back panel is cut on the fold, but on the pattern it says to cut 2 mirrored (which i already did).. is this a mistake in your instructions or on the pattern? I hope it will still fit .. thank you!
Hello, if you are using a fabric with stretch, you can cut on fold since the garment will stretch over you to fit. If the fabric does not have stretch, the back pattern gets cut twice and sewn together to install a zipper for entry.
Love to read your blog! Thanks for posting some valuable post. so much creative tips .
We are glad you are enjoying the blog and all it has to offer! Happy sewing 🙂
hey i want to make a dress similar like this but shorter in lenght
Hello, you are able to accomplish this by cutting your desired amount from the bottom of the patterns for front and back. 🙂
Hi there, is there a reason this pattern does not list yardage? Is that the case for all of your free patterns?
Hello, this pattern in a size small requires 2 yards of fabric. You can find the yardage on this blog post under the section of products used as well as the “shop this look” box.
I made this, see my photos and review here: https://sewing.patternreview.com/review/pattern/199715
Thank you very much for sharing, your final result looks great! We hope you continue to enjoy from our free sewing patterns. 🙂
