I think it’s safe to say that short shorts are officially a thing of the past (thank goodness). This season, we’re seeing the Bermuda trend from last year escalate into a surprisingly stylish and comfortable must-have for summer. The Myrtle Shorts feature a high, pleated waist – perfect for a variety of body types – and a length that could be easily shortened or lengthened to suit your style!

Note: The matching top here was created with the bodice of The Bridgerton Dress and the lower bodice from The Sollya Romper!

Purchase Materials Used Below:
- 1.5 yards Mood Exclusive Balance of Peace Stretch Cotton Sateen
- 1 129 Flesh 9″ Invisible Zipper
- MDF245 – The Myrtle Shorts Sewing Pattern (free download below!)
All seam allowances are 1/2″ unless otherwise stated. See chart below for sizing specifications. Note, this specific pattern is available up to a size 30.

Step 1
Attach your two front panels at the front rise using a French seam. Mark all your pleat notches and the direction your pleats should be folded.

Step 2
Pin each of your pleats and stay-stitch them in place.

Step 3
Add your back darts and ttach your two back panels along the bottom half of your back rise using a French seam. The remainder of the rise stays open for adding the zipper later.
Step 4
Attach the front and back of your shorts at the side and inseams, again with French seams.

Step 5
Attach one long edge of your waistband along the top of your shorts. Insert your invisible zipper starting halfway down the height of your entire waistband panel. Once sewn in, fold your waistband in half toward the inside of your garment, tuck in the raw edges, and slip-stitch to finish.
Step 6
Finish up the remainder of your center back seam, if need be, and hem your shorts with a 1″ fold-up hem!

It is so cute. And the mashed top is stunning !
Thanks for this great pattern
Love the pleats! I LOVE the funky print! But how can I hack it for pockets?
You can definitely add some inseam pockets pretty easily! 🙂
Muy lindo cada. Patrón
Great pattern! What are the fabric requirements for plus sizes?
You can find yardage recommendations in the ‘Shop this Look’ widget! 🙂
Thank you so much. Now to narrow down my fabric choices!
love this!! do you know approx. how many yards would you need for the top?
Thanks!! I used about 2 yards for the top. 🙂 The sleeves are huuuuuge.
What size is the model wearing? It’s a beautiful pattern!
Thanks! 🙂 These are a size 4.
These are cute, adding side pockets would make them better
I def wouldn’t add pockets… you would cover up the beautiful pleats. Going to give it a go….
Not sure if I have the right fabric. Got some scuba type fabric going to use.
Thank you so much for this pattern… I tried it in cotton and it was so easy to piece together. I will try with pockets next time.
is the seam allowance included in the print out pattern? I am so obsessed with these shorts!!
Yes, a 1/2″ is already included! 🙂
I made the trousers and even though I’m a total beginner I managed to do it thanks to your amazing pattern. I also want to try the top and I wanted to ask which sleeves you used.
Hi, Suzanne! The top was an altered version of the Bridgerton Dress. 🙂
Ok, Thanks so much
Did you just shorten the sleeves from the dress pattern, to not have the lower gathered detail, and so it then has an elastic casing? lol… can’t really tell what’s going on in all that poof. Really a cute hack!!!
Hi, Barbara! I cut the sleeve normally, but I just skipped the upper gathering. The lower gathering is done with an elastic casing, yes! 🙂
Merci de votre réponse 🙂
Is there a view of the back or the shorts? This would be the first pattern i ever do. So im having a hard time picturing how you attach the waistband and zipper.
Hi Karina, unfortunately we don’t have a photo of the back, but here are some extra instructions to help you:
1 – Sew your waistband pieces together, then sew the waistband outer to the shorts, leaving the waistband lining’s bottom edge free.
2 – Unzip your invisible zipper, and notice how the teeth are laying against the zipper tape. Unfold them away from the tape, and use an iron to press open.
3 – Pin the zipper to the shorts and the waistband outer, keeping it free of the waistband lining for now. The zipper and fabric should be right sides together, with the teeth pointing away from the fabric’s raw edge.
4 – You can either sew the two together now, and afterward, fold the waistband lining inward, fold the raw edges down and hand stitch in place, or you can do the following:
1 – Hand baste the zipper in place.
2 – Press the waistband lining’s lower edge seam allowance to the wrong side.
3 – Fold the waistband lining and outer, right sides together, hiding the top half of the zipper between the two layers. Hand baste together
4 – Sew the zipper, clip the corner of the waistband, and turn right side out.
5 – Sew the waistband lining to the shorts.
Ill give this a try. Thanks!
Is it street sizes for 4-6, or dress sizes.. I donèt really understand how to know my size. Thanks!
Hi Renee, we’re sorry for the delay in responding to your question! We get dozens of comments and questions each day, and so many questions get buried and, unfortunately, unanswered. We are now focusing user support on patterns 2 years and newer. We hope this will prevent questions on our more current patterns from going unanswered. Although this is late, we wanted to respond in case anyone else has the same question: these are in street sizing, not dress sizing!
Holaa, me encanto el short pero me gustaria saber como podria hacer la blusa. Gracias 🙂
Hola, esta blusa esta hecha de una mezcla de dos patrones, Bridgerton and Sollya
Hi,
I have only just found your website and it looks great. I wonder if you could tell me please if the sizes used are US sizes or UK.
Many thanks
Hello, our patterns are made in US sizes.
