The Myrtle Shorts - Free Sewing Pattern

Posted on April 9, 2021 by Lee Norris

I think it's safe to say that short shorts are officially a thing of the past (thank goodness). This season, we're seeing the Bermuda trend from last year escalate into a surprisingly stylish and comfortable must-have for summer. The Myrtle Shorts feature a high, pleated waist - perfect for a variety of body types - and a length that could be easily shortened or lengthened to suit your style!

Note: The matching top here was created with the bodice of The Bridgerton Dress and the lower bodice from The Sollya Romper!

Attach your two front panels at the front rise using a French seam. Mark all your pleat notches and the direction your pleats should be folded.

Pin each of your pleats and stay-stitch them in place.

Add your back darts and ttach your two back panels along the bottom half of your back rise using a French seam. The remainder of the rise stays open for adding the zipper later.

Attach the front and back of your shorts at the side and inseams, again with French seams.

Attach one long edge of your waistband along the top of your shorts. Insert your invisible zipper starting halfway down the height of your entire waistband panel. Once sewn in, fold your waistband in half toward the inside of your garment, tuck in the raw edges, and slip-stitch to finish.

Finish up the remainder of your center back seam, if need be, and hem your shorts with a 1" fold-up hem!
