When it comes to summer, is there any such thing as too vibrant? Mood has an insanely stunning selection of Ankara prints, each more colorful than the last, and each absolutely perfect for some fun summer outfits. The Petunia Romper features a halter neckline, a zipped back, and an adorable cutout in the front to keep you cool and chic in the sun this season!
Fabrics & materials used:
- Yellow and Blue Geometric Waxed Cotton African Print
- Black Invisible Zipper
- Black Gutermann Thread
- MDF052 – The Petunia Sewing Pattern (free download below!)
Following the guides on your pattern, begin by inserting darts into each of the bodice and shorts panels, like you see above.
Along the curved bottom edge of the front panels, sew a rolled hem and press.
Fabric faces together, attach the panels along the neckline and armholes. Notch the seam allowance like you can see above, and then turn right side out and press.
Next, attach the back bodice to the top of the back shorts panels, and then sew the back lining along the top of the back bodice.
Insert your invisible zipper along the center back seam, starting just below the top of the bodice and going about 5″-7″ into the shorts. Trim the zipper and then sew along the remainder of the shorts rise, connecting the two shorts panels.
Return to the front part of your romper and connect the two shorts panels along the front rise. Attach the bodice to the shorts with a French seam, sandwiching the front waistband in between both layers.
Attach the front and back of your romper along the side seams and your garment is starting to take shape!
Hem the bottom of your shorts and fold your straps in half, right sides together, and sew along the length. Turn them right side out, slip-stitch to the top of your bodice neckline, and press.
Lastly, fold the raw edges of the back lining inward, and slip-stitch around to finish.
There are so many incredible fabric options for this pattern! Will you be going with a fun and vibrant cotton print like this one that I used, or with you choose something more subtle?

Wow! I usually don’t comment except for problems with the downloads but this is a gorgeous pattern which is almost lost in the gorgeous fabric used to make it up. But the fabric does bring out all the great details in this pattern. A must have for the summer season!
Fabulous
Adorable and glamourous at the same time. I could see this top interest with the midriff baring as a base for a long evening gown that spans the seasons.
How much fabric is needed to make this?
Hi Sarah, you’d need about 2.5 yards. 🙂
Hi Courtney – is seam allowance already built into the pattern or do I add it?
Yes, 1/2″ seam allowance is already included. 🙂
I just cut this pattern out and although I can sew, I cannot figure certain things out without explanations. With that being said, hopefully this is not a dumb question but I can see where darts go on the back and front shorts, however on the bodice is where I’m having a issue. I see the circles for the tip of the dart on the bodice, but I don’t see where the tip should lead to. I see 1 single line and 1 “v” notch on each side but I don’t think those are the dart ends. Can someone help me?
Hi LaDayna! I think I just sent you a shot of how the dart goes on Instagram. 🙂 The little V notch underneath the dart is where the two bodice pieces overlap on each other and align at the side seams. I hope that makes sense – let me know if you need anymore help!
Hi Courtney! Thank you so much for the patterns, i’m super excited, this was my first sewing project ever 3 weeks ago and i’m super happy with the result. I used kind of silky teal and coral solid fabrics. It’s not perfect but i’m proud of the result. I’ll tag you later on Instagram so you can see it. Can’t wait to make another pattern from you, they’re amazing!
That sounds amazing! Can’t wait to see pics. 🙂
love this pattern! i am a girl that loves me a one-piece outfit. my only criticism is that I might move the zipper into the side seam because I have a hard time doing up back zippers by myself lol
