Embracing the World of Tricot Fabric
Tricot fabric has become essential in our wardrobes and lives due to its smooth texture, flexible structure, and durability. Originating in France, tricot is a type of warp-knit fabric known for its resilience against fraying and its ability to stretch. However, maintaining its distinct qualities demands meticulous care.
Understanding tricot fabric care is imperative. Proper care ensures longevity, preserves texture and keeps your tricot items looking as good as new. Let’s delve into the ultimate guide to tricot fabric care and unravel its secrets.

The Basics of Tricot Care: Decoding the Care Label
Tricot fabric requires a specific set of care needs, which can often be found on care labels. Symbols on these labels provide critical care instructions. For instance, MoodFabrics products suggest the following: rinse with non-chlorinated water after use, machine wash at 40° Celsius, avoid bleach, tumble dry, iron at low heat, and use any solvent except trichloroethylene when dry cleaning.
Mastering the Craft: Cutting and Sewing Tricot Fabric
When working with tricot fabric, understanding and implementing the correct techniques for cutting and sewing can greatly impact the end product, especially since tricot’s signature stretch requires more attention than typical woven materials.
Start by always using sharp, high-quality fabric shears for cutting. Dull scissors can result in uneven edges and can potentially fray the tricot fabric, disrupting its inherent beauty and structure. Ensure the scissors move along the grain lines of the fabric. Cutting along these lines maintains the fabric’s structure, prevents unnecessary stretching, and makes sewing much easier.
Regarding sewing tricot fabric, specialized tools can make the task more manageable. A ballpoint needle, sometimes called a jersey needle, is specifically designed for sewing knit and stretch fabrics like tricot.
The choice of thread is also critical in sewing tricot fabric. Polyester thread is usually recommended because of its strength and its slight give, which complements tricot’s stretchy nature. Additionally, using a stretch stitch or a narrow zigzag stitch can accommodate the fabric’s flexibility and ensure your seams stretch with the fabric, instead of snapping under pressure.
Sewing tricot can also benefit from a walking foot on your sewing machine, as it can help guide the fabric smoothly and prevent bunching or stretching as you sew.
Lastly, patience and practice play an integral part in mastering the craft of cutting and sewing tricot fabric. Given its unique properties, working with tricot might feel different compared to other fabrics, but with time, you’ll be able to create stunning pieces with ease.

Cleaning & Washing Tricot: A Gentle Approach
Choosing the right cleaning agents for tricot fabric is critical. Opt for gentle, fabric-friendly detergents to avoid damaging the material. When machine washing, consider using a delicate cycle and cold water to prevent shrinkage and stretching. Hand-washing tricot fabric can also be a safer alternative.
Stain Removal: Conquer Stains with Confidence
Transform the way you view stains on your tricot fabric with a positive, proactive approach. With the right removal techniques, preserving your garments becomes a simple task. Battle food and drink spills successfully using gentle dish soap, and show ink stains the door with the help of rubbing alcohol. Always remember to try your stain-removal strategy on a hidden area first, ensuring that your tricot fabric remains unharmed and vibrant.
Drying Tricot Fabric: The Art of Air Drying
The process of drying tricot fabric is just as important as washing. For increased fabric longevity, consider air drying, but if the care label instructs, you can also tumble dry. Lay the garment flat on a towel and reshape it gently to maintain its form.
Ironing & Heat Damage Prevention: Achieving Wrinkle-Free Perfection
Ironing tricot fabric requires careful attention to prevent heat damage. Always iron on the lowest heat setting and consider using a pressing cloth between the iron and the fabric. Alternatively, use a fabric steamer or hang your garments in a steam-filled bathroom for a gentler approach to wrinkle removal.
Storing Tricot Fabric: The Perfect Spot
Proper storage of tricot fabric is essential to maintain its quality. Store your tricot items in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. Ensure good ventilation to prevent any musty smells and keep the fabric fresh.
Extending the Life of Your Tricot Apparel: Longevity Tips
Regular maintenance can significantly extend the life of your tricot items. Avoid common mistakes such as overwashing or exposing the fabric to harsh chemicals. A careful approach to cleaning, drying, and ironing can help preserve your tricot apparel’s quality and appearance.

By following these tricot fabric care practices, you can ensure the longevity and durability of your tricot items. Investing time in proper care not only preserves your fabric but also results in sustainable clothing practices. Start implementing these strategies today and witness the transformation in your tricot apparel’s lifespan.
Informative article but 40°Celsius contradicts the later instructions of wash in cool water?
Hi Trish, we’re sorry for the delay in responding to your question! We get dozens of comments and questions each day, and so many questions get buried and, unfortunately, unanswered. Although this is late, we wanted to respond in case anyone else has the same question: the post has been updated!
I think it is interesting that you talk about “sustainable clothing practices” but most of the new certified eco/sustainable mood fabrics are dry-clean only. It would be really great if there was a way to filter fabrics by “care” requirements. I spend way to much time scrollong and clicking to see if I would consider purchasing a fabric because I do not want dry-clean fabrics.
Hi! That’s a great idea – I will pass that onto the team! We do have quite a few ECO fabrics that you can hand wash or machine wash, but I do understand your frustration with the inability to filter the dry clean only fabrics out. 🙂
