Our original Winterberry Cape featured an ankle-length silhouette, perfect for a dramatic look, but we’re re-releasing this free sewing pattern with a few different length options! This new version features optional cut lines for a hem length of about 26″, 38″, and 48″. Since the sewing instructions remain the same as the original pattern regardless of the length you choose, let’s use the remainder of this post to take a look at how we’re seeing capes on the runway this season!

Fabrics
The types of fabrics for capes this year are coming in multiple versions. The most common fabrics we’re seeing on the runway are wool, wool blends, knitwear, patchwork, and heavy woven fabrics. Most of the capes you will see will be made out of a heavy wool to keep you warm for the winter.

Trending Colors
For colors this year, we have a wide selection to choose from. There is a large mix of vibrant shades, jewel tones, and a lot of printed patterns. Jewel colors for this year are brown, navy, rust orange, olive, and fall red. Vibrant colors for this year include bright pink, pale pink, primary blue, and yellow.

Styles
The styles vary between the wearer, but what is being seen a lot on the runways are long or mid-length capes. The most popular capes are the ones with open armhole slits, thus making them more versatile for everyday wear!

I am excited to make this. Considering a light weight coating to make it reversible for fall in black and camel.
also considering adding plackets on each side to allow for an insertable pea coat idea for warmth
I love this but really want something with a hood… Do you know if there is an easy way to add one to this pattern? Either instead of the collar or over?
Hi Cayley! Our Kerria Anorak Free Sewing Pattern is a great place to start if you’re looking for a hood pattern!
I love this pattern. I’m making one for myself for my wedding and another one for my sister. (Im making my sister’s first) but I got an idea to make a matching one for her daughter who is 1 1/2 years old. Can i get some tips on how to adjust the pattern to fit her?
Hi Elizabeth! I recommend drafting a new pattern for her, perhaps using a half circle skirt pattern piece made to her measurements (take a look at our circle skirt calculator). Use her neck circumference as the waist measurement, and the desired length of the cape as the skirt length measurement. Print just the collar pieces of the Winterberry Cape, playing around with the print scale until you find a general size that you can work with, making whatever adjustments you need. Definitely sew a mock-up before you move onto the final fabric! This might take some trial and error. Good luck!
Thank you
I just can’t figure out how to assemble the pattern like how to tape it together
Hi Zané! We’ve got a video tutorial all about how to tape the patterns together!
