Our newest featured free sewing pattern is a beautiful form-fitting skirt that will absolutely demand attention. The Viola Skirt has a fit-and-flare silhouette with an asymmetrically ruffled flounce that’s very flattering on any body type. This skirt can easily go from formal to casual. Try styling your skirt with a sequin tank for a night out on the town, or throw on your favorite denim jacket and a graphic tee for an everyday look! Here, I used one of Mood’s ponte knits, which has a gorgeous shimmering foil design. You could also try one using one of Mood’s neoprene or scuba knits as another option. I could even see a stunning version in a beautifully printed cotton sateen. Where would you wear your Viola Skirt? We’d love to know!

All seam allowances are 1/2″ unless otherwise stated. See chart below for sizing specifications. Note, this specific pattern is available up to a size 30.
Here’s how to sew:
First, sew the pocket facings on the skirt fronts. Turn the pocket facing, press, and stitch along the pocket curve.
Pin the back of the pocket in place and stitch, creating the pocket bag.
Next, before pinning the fronts together, attach the fly facing to the fly opening.
Then, fold back and press. Now, pin together the fronts and stitch along the center front seam up until you reach the edge of the fly. Back-stitch a couple of times to secure.
Press back the fly opening and stitch along the edge. Top-stitch along the outer edge of the fly leaving a 2.5″ opening.
Sew in your darts on the backs. Pin backs together and stitch along the center back seam.
Attach your front to the back at the side seams and stitch.
Pin your waistband to the top opening and stitch all the way around.
Fold over the waistband press and top-stitch along the edge.
Stitch along the top edge of each ruffle using a basting stitch. Slightly pull on the threads to gather the top of the ruffle.
Attach each ruffle at the side seams and stitch in place.
Pin the ruffle to the skirt bottom and sew.
Lastly, sew on your button and buttonhole. If you would like to add belt loops, you can easily self-draft a pattern 1.5″ by 2.5″ to fit a belt 1.5″ wide.
And that’s it! Your lovely skirt is done!

You used stretch here, would it work with a corduroy, non stretch fabric? The fly is fake so I’m thinking not but wanted to ask
Hi, Amanda! It does have some darts, so you may be able to make it work with corduroy. I’d recommend trying it with muslin first though, as you may need to size up and add an invisible zipper somewhere to accommodate for the lack of stretch. 🙂

I thought I’d leave this comment here too. I think this skirt would look great in denim, either full or partial denim. If done in partial denim, use the top portion, and leave the bottom portion for a sheer, chiffon, or a solid lightweight flowy material.
My thoughts exactly, a denim on top and a soft flowy for the ruffle. Way too cute!
