If you love leather but want to keep your costs low, think about using leather for the focal point of the garment and then ponte for the rest. Take this DKNY skirt above, for example. To knock it off, you’d buy one large skin (or about a yard of faux leather or faux suede) for the front panel and then sew the rest of the skirt out of ponte knit fabric.
Ponte is a thicker type of knit that sews up like a woven (doesn’t curl or get all floppy on you like jerseys do) but has the stretch and wearing ease of a knit. Designers are using ponte like crazy for RTW because they know women love to wear it.
A couple of years ago I made this black leather vest above with black ponte as the back panel. It’s turned out to be a timeless piece and I get more compliments on it than anything I’ve made.
If you’re spending this Labor Day weekend thinking about fall sewing plans, give some thought to a leather and ponte skirt, dress, vest or jacket. Mood has the best ponte knits around, if I do say so. You can thank Mood when your leather and ponte piece turns out to be your most favorite thing ever!

I really like this trend but laundering keeps me from trying it as a skin should only be specially dry cleaned.
