Award season has begun with the Golden Globes! From Billy Porter to Allison Brie, stars were reminding us why fashion week exists with looks we’ve seen before. The fashion of 2019 was on display in full last night, with vibrant colors and styles that shined bright. Although many of these styles are too extravagant for everyday wear, they’re perfect for prom inspiration, or you can dress down these styles for intricate cocktail ensembles. Let’s take a look at the first fashions of this award season.
Barely There
Tulle and lace held a lot of stars together last night, that along with some well-placed fashion tape. Crazy Rich Asians’ Constance Wu wore a nude tulle gown, paired perfectly with a pumpkin belt, while Emily Blunt chose a lace dress a bit more revealing than something you’d expect to see on Mary Poppins. Halle Berry reminded us why she reigns supreme as the fashion queen of Hollywood with a breathtaking maroon burnout gown, and Kiki Layne’s blush dress featured some stunning corsetry.

Bright Beading
You may not have been able to see all the stars in Hollywood last night, but many chose to shine brightly with beading. GLOW’s Alison Brie was a glamorous lady of the red carpet in a pearl bralette worn under a stunning yet simple tulle dress, while Emma Stone’s scalloped sequins gave a very twenties vibe. Keri Russel’s dramatic neckline was paired with show-stopping shine and a simple silhouette, and Lupita Nyongo’s fringed gown had movement and texture unlike any other on the red carpet.

Living Coral
Living Coral is the up and coming color of the year. A blend of fiery red and soft pink, a couple different shades of this color were seen at the Golden Globes. Alex Bornstein’s dress leaned towards 2018’s fiery red, along with Laura Dern’s tulle gown. Danai Gurira’s stunning living coral sequins were layered over a sherbet satin, while Patricia Clarkson’s gown featured a variety of coral colors.

Solids
In a time when conversational prints are layered over one another like paper mache, many celebrities stepped out of the box in solid colored gowns. Allison Janney wore a stunning, ice-blue ensemble, while Amy Adams went with a darker shade of teal executed beautifully with an off-the-shoulder silhouette. Melissa McCarthy’s purple number was accented with subtle star appliques, and The Favourite’s Olivia Coleman went with an understated black ensemble that was much more elegant than Queen Anne ever was.

Menswear
Although some may argue that men can’t compete, these men prove them wrong. Cody Fern stepped out of the tuxedo and into the fire with a pair of trousers and a basic button up, while American Crime Stories’ Darren Criss wore a lovely floral blazer. Luke Evans looked sleek with a simple white blazer, and Spike Lee wore an absolute stunner of a suit in purple with golden accessories and the perfect hat to boot.

Best Dressed
Best Dressed may be a controversial category, but these celebrities were clearly at the top of the pack at the Golden Globes this year. Billy Porter and Lady Gaga both made headlines with larger-than-life looks executed with style and grace. Glenn Close won big with The Wife last night, and with a beautiful cape dress that left me screaming (literally screaming) at the television for several minutes after. Lucy Boyton and Nicole Kidman wore slinky sequins and chainmail, with simple accessories that didn’t overpower the look. The Marvelous Ms. Maisel’s Rachel Brosnahan wore a happy shade of yellow that may seem simple but moved with grace and elegance above all else. Mary Queen of Scots star Saoirse Ronan made many lose their own heads in a dramatic gown that featured a deep v neckline with fringed crystal embroidery.

I’m here for Billy Porter’s cape! Love it!
Yes, me too! I’m so tired of basic black tuxedos for menswear, we need more Billy Porters!
