Fashion Month may be nearest and dearest in the heart of New York, but Hollywood has award season on the mind. Although the actors might be the focal point of the evening, the red carpet is all about fashion. From Zac Posen to Gucci, Givenchy to Tom Ford, designs we’ve been seeing on runways and in photo shoots are making their debut on the arms of Hollywood’s best and brightest. Let’s take a look at the season so far, and what we’re expecting to see at the Academy Awards on March fourth.
All White and Black
Actors took a stand at the Golden Globes this year by wearing all black to stand with the #MeToo movement, like Salma Hayek’s Balenciaga dress, but black and white permeated throughout award season. Abbie Cornish wore a stunning white Philosophy di Lorenza Serafini dress with black bows, and Childish Gambino aka Donald Glover stepped out in a lovely white suit by Ermenegildo Zegna Couture. Taylor Schilling and Natasha Lyonne, two of the stars from “Orange is the New Black”, wore Proenza Schoule dresses in all black, and Lady Gaga displayed her penchant for fashion once again with a beautiful Armani gown.

Feathers were the trim of choice this award season. Margot Robbie in Miu Miu and Angelina Jolie in Versace Atelier both featured feathers as a simple trim, while Karen Fairchild and Jackie Cruz in Rami Kadi used feathers as a major part of their gowns. Lupita Nyong’o wore a stunning sequin gown with a mesh overlay that had feathers around the bottom.
Let these feathers tickle your fancy:
The ever-enchanting leg slit made its way to fame in 2012 when Angelina Jolie’s leg circulated throughout the internet. This year, the leg slit was present on many red carpet garments, from Gal Gadot’s small slit on her Tom Ford dress to Giuliana Rancic’s much more extreme gash on her Mikael D gown. Alison Brie wore a gorgeous red gown from Dundas, while Andra Day wore a custom Victoria Hayes dress. Kerry Washington’s sequined dress featured a leg slit, and hit at the perfect length to show off those beautiful shoes.

Women stepped out in suits on the red carpet, passing up the ball gown for an ensemble just as stunning. Claire Foy in Stella McCartney and Clea DuVall both wore simple black suits, while Janelle Monae rocked a Dolce & Gabbana suit with floral motiffs growing up the pant legs and sleeves. Ava Max wore a stunning jacquard suit in orange and pink, and Rapsody wore a beautiful green suit with a long train.

Floor length may be the award show staple, but some celebrities are opting for the midi. Chrissy Teigen wore a beautiful Yanina Couture dress, bedecked with sequins, while Elisabeth Moss stuck with a bejeweled collar on her simple midi dress by Dior Haute Couture. Katie Holmes wore a lovely Zac Posen dress that sparkled and shined, and Sarah Jessica Parker reminded us all how fashionably she can be with a Dolce & Gabbana dress. Sarah Silverman’s simple black midi dress by Romona Keveza and Dean Davidson was belted beautifully with a simple golden belt.
