The pièce de résistance of any given fashion month is Paris, the linchpin of high-end design. From Balmain’s spikes and studs to the burlesque-esque (burl-esque?) stylings of Alexander McQueen, the heavy hitters take their swings. The hits are harder while misses make their marks, and Fall 2019 was no different. Let’s take a look at the top trends from PFW Fall 2019.
Capes
There’s been an uptick of capes of any kind on the runway for Fall 2019, from full-on coats to simple dresses. Balmain featured a lovely cape with powerful shoulders, while Celine showed a cape dress in a fierce cheetah print. Elie Saab’s cape suit was an absolute stunner, featuring sequins and pleating, and Loewe showed a delicate and feminine white cape with ribbing. Valentino’s line was a win across the board, and I mean this with the utmost respect when I say that this beautiful cape and hat are giving me major Darth Vader vibes.
Create capes with these fabrics:
Cerulean
A calming hue that reminds one of deep, undisturbed waters twinkling in the sun, cerulean blue made waves this season. Balenciaga’s disco dress features a boat neck and striped sequins, and Elie Saab showed yet another stunner with well-placed ruffles on a knee-length dress. Lutz Huella took the sweater dress to the next level, made with a floral brocade and adorned with a ruffle along the bottom. Nina Ricci reminds the world that this is Fall after all with a cerulean blue coat and matching scarf, while RTA points out that the season never really matters when you’re wearing a beautiful dress.
Calm and captivating, create with these cerulean fabrics:
Cropped Blazer
The business suit got cut for Fall 2019, literally with cropped blazer showing up on the runway. Courreges’ features a wide collar, while Elie Saab showed a tuxedo blazer over a lovely evening gown. Givenchy’s cropped blazer is a little looser than most, worn over a ruffled tunic and matching trousers. Sandro shows that suits don’t have to be serious, pairing a cropped blazer with denim, and Stella McCartney’s rust-colored suit shows a cropped blazer tucked into high-waisted trousers.
Get cut with these fabrics:
Forties Fashion
The early forties were rife with strife, as the depression came to an end and WWII reached its peak. The fashion was sleek and utilitarian unless you were a Hollywood screen siren, where rick silks ruled. These styles were emulated on the runway, like Alessandra Rich’s slinky polka dotted piece, a personal favorite of mine. Delpozo showed a utilitarian style with high waisted, lightly tapered trousers, embellished with a beaded button-up blouse, and Givenchy showed a beautiful floral printed silk gown. Johanna Ortiz tiered ruffles pair well with bishop sleeves, while Mulberry combines the utilitarian style of the decade with the fiery red that has enamored fashion for literally years.
Fashion the forties with these fabrics:
Pleats
This Fall, I learned that literally anything can be pleated, like the stunning leather ruffles on Alexander McQueen’s burl-esque (burlesque-esque?) dress. Balenciaga showed an absolutely beautiful dress with a pleated skirt and pussy bow, while Celine went for a plaid pleated skirt, playing with the grown-up school girl aesthetic. Melitta Baumeister plays with pleating with a stunning dress that featured pleated bishop sleeves and, well, pleated everything else, and Valentino gives a pop of color underneath pink pleats.
Play with pleats with these fabrics:
What style was your favorite at Fall 2019 Ready-to-Wear? I have to say, this is the best season of fashion I have ever had the pleasure of writing about. Almost every collection had something that made me stop and stare, and it was truly difficult picking just a few garments to write about. Let me know what you think in the comments, and whether you were just as pleased with Fall 2019 as I was!

Thanks so much for your fashion rundown! There is a lot to like about this year’s fall fashion trends and I’ll certainly be sewing up a few. Working on a cape for my son right now and hope to have it finished before the cold weather takes flight, but if not, he’ll be right in step for the fall.
Thanks for reading! I love a good cape, your son is going to be styling!!!
I love the beautiful blue Nina Ricci coat and matching scarf! It’s fashionable AND it makes sense in cold climates like we have here in Michigan. There is absolutely nothing like a great coat!
Yes, I totally agree! Although I don’t deal with anything nearly as rough as a Michigan winter, the East Coast can get pretty cold. Having a coat that’s warm and stylish, like the lovely Nina Ricci Coat or the Calypso Jacket on Mood Sewciety, totally makes below-freezing a little more tolerable. Thank you for reading, I’m glad you enjoyed the post!
Exciting to see the trends from the runway. Thanks! I love pleats and the schoolgirl look so the Celine skirt/blazer combo caught my eye. As for capes-I’m on board with that also! I have a great vintage Sybil Connoly Vogue pattern frim the 70s featuring a beautiful cape. So this must be the year I give it a go!
Yes, these trends are giving me life! I’m so over winter but the capes and schoolgirl styles have me yearning for Fall! Thank you for reading, I’m glad you have a reason to make that cape!
Hello:). I am still working on my embroidered spring coat. Molly, I truly enjoy reading your fashion runway reports. Inspiring! Hard to pick a favorite style. Pleats, capes, cropped jackets….
Hi, I’m so glad you enjoyed my post! Yes, there were so many wonderful trends, it’s difficult to pick just one. Even just nailing down this report to five trends was hard! An embroidered coat for Spring sounds beautiful, don’t forget to tag Mood so we can check it out!
