The early 2000’s are so totally in! From soft pink skirts paired with camouflage tees to polo shirts that would look right at home on the golf course (and some that wouldn’t), the early 2000’s are in full swing as we head into 2020. Denim, jersey tank tops, and velour tracksuits should all be on your fashionable must haves, and don’t forget to pop that Britney Spears CD in the car ’cause the 2000’s are gonna hit you baby, one more time- at least, one more time this year.
Baggy Clothes
Let loose this season with baggy clothes, an early 2000’s staple. A difficult trend to master, designers have taken the 2000’s extreme and made it much more flattering while laying limp on the body. Ami shows this artfully with a maxi shirt dress, cinched lightly at the waist, while Etoile Isabel Marant’s longline blazer is the perfect way to rock androgynous business attire. Eytys has their model out here looking like a 2003 rapper with a baggy shirt and pants, while Gianni doubles down on the times with a loose denim set. Preen by Thornton’s relaxed suit is stunning, and I adore Stell McCartney’s leather coat.
Relax with Mood’s Nepeta Blazer and Nymania Pants, the perfect relax suit for heading to brunch or a business dinner! Use faux leather to create loose pants with structure, or jersey for something that will drape with ease.
Camo
Cute and cool, camouflage is making a comeback. Seen in a stunningly ornate camo jacket from Nili Lotan and R13’s sequined style, the camo trend demands to be seen. Norma Kamali created a beautifully tailored suit for the modern hunter on the go, while Raquel Allegra utilizes a sheer camouflage for an ensemble with depth. Valentino painted the runway with camo for menswear, and Vetements fashion a matching jacket and skirt, worn over a sweatsuit.
Not into camouflage, but appreciate a natural look? Try earthy greens and ocean blues to put your own twist on this 90’s essential, or create a camouflage Avelia Bomber Jacket from Mood Sewciety!
Denim
Who could forget the denim outfits of the early 2000’s? No one, because designers just won’t let us. Adeam’s denim blouse is absolutely stunning paired with pristine patchwork pants, Dsquared2’s denim set is an absolute classic. I’m absolutely in love with Etoile Isabel Marant’s denim ensemble, paired with gorgeous white boots, and Nili Lotan’s set looked ideal for folk singers on the road, a popular style this season. Philosophy di Lorenzo’s denim dress is what Britney needed all along, and Stella McCartney’s rugged style features a beautiful ombre detail.
Want the look of a denim but not the stiffness? Utilize a chambray for a lightweight look, or twill for some structure! Mood’s Lunaria Dress would look gorgeous in denim, as well as the Primrose Pants!
Polos
You know it when you see it, the polo shirt. Collar, button placket, and an air of preppiness palpable all along. Originally worn by polo players in the 1920’s, the polo shirt made another mark on fashion history in the early 2000’s. Adam Lippes’ polo features a subtle texture and green pattern that’s absolutely lovely, while Karen Walker creates a simple polo dress with some contrasting white stripes. Michael Kors Collection plays around with the cropped polo, and Nanushka creates a looser polo dress that features a leather ties that brings it all together. I am obsessed with No. 21’s golden polo with black collar, and Off-White creatures an asymmetrical polo dress with depth.
Tracksuits
Ah, the tracksuit. Whether yours was velour with “JUICY” on the posterior, or jersey and exclusively for working out, we are all familiar with this silhouettes. Claudia Li’s tracksuit features some 70’s style swoops, while Gucci went full on 2000’s with an extremely relaxed fit. Iceberg drops all pretense of athletics with tracksuit that features a sheer strip up the side, and Maison Kitsune’s set looks ready for business. Nehera’s short-sleeved shirt and wide-leg pants look up for a jog to the local coffee shop, and Norma Kamali’s tracksuit is perfect for heading to the pool.
So, like, which of these trends do you totally love? Or are the 2000’s a total drag? Personally, I could leave the camo, but I am here for all that denim! And those polo dresses! What do you think? Let me know in the comments!
