The designer is in the details, which is clear when you look at this years New York Fashion Week. From feathered trim to pleats and ruffles, garments were intricate and elegant. Let’s take a look at the best details from this year’s NYFW.

Feathered Trim

Feathered trim added movement and drama to many collections this season, with Pamella Roland displaying this stunning look with a feathered cape thrown over an elegant gown. Adam Selman’s feathered neckline is the perfect accent to the striped dress, while Eric Schlosberg fashions an entire skirt out of feathered trim. Libertine’s already shift dress is made even more flowy with feathered trim around the wrists and bottom hem, and Monique Lhullier’s drop-dead gorgeous, 20’s style gown is made complete with feathered arms.

Fringe

Some give an inch while others take a mile in fringe this Spring 2018. A Détacher’s fringe detailing up the leg of their pants is a stunning and creative way to add movement to a typically stiff garment, while Norma Kamali’s pants made entirely out of fringe turn the tables on traditional trousers. Monique Lhullier displays her pension for grandeur and elegance with a silver gown detailed with fringe, and Pamella Roland shows that the simple cocktail dress can step it up a notch with fringe. Nomia’s basic tank top transitions into high-fashion with a trip of long, chainette fringe trim.

Knots

Designers tied the knot this season with knots of fabric detailing their garments. Adam Lippes’ red and white plaid is taken to new heights with a knotted bodice, and Derek Lam installed a similar detail on a maxi dress. Brandon Maxwell’s halter top is kept together with a knot on the neck, and Lela Rose’s matching blouse and trousers have a knot in the front to add movement. Whit’s small knot in the front of the sundress is the perfect detail on this sweet and simple dress.

Pleats

Pleats were popular at this years NYFW. Alejandra Alonso Rojas had smaller pleats, adding texture to this gorgeous red gown. Marina’s white dress shows off beautiful movement, with the pleats catching the wind, while TSE’s more rigid pleats are ideal for lounging in the sun. Elizabeth Kennedy proves that pleats are powerful, in a pleated, floor-length gown perfect for a fancy night of dinner and dance. Rosie Assoulin’s pleated dress in coral is perfect for a vacation in the Bahamas.

Ruffles

Ruffles added texture and movement in many collections this year. Alena Akhamudullina’s ruffled dress looks very peasant-chic, while Rachel Antonoff’s top made entirely of ruffles has a much more disco vibe. Milly uses suiting in an interesting way, with an asymmetrical top held up by one sleeve of ruffles. Brock Collection’s off the shoulder blouse with ruffled sleeves is full of class and sophistication, and Carolina Herrera’s sheer, ruffled blouse is the perfect top for warm spring days.

Ties

Ties came into play in an interesting way this NYFW, whether they were there for function or fashion. Alena Akhmadullina’s dress seems to be held up entirely by a long line of ties up the front, while Marchesa’s dress is held together with a tie around the midriff. Self-Portrait uses a tie detailing on the hips of some pants, and Fenty x Puma utilizes the inverse of this ideal with a body suit that ties at the hips. Ekhaus Latta creates a simple top with intricate detailing in the front ties which keep the top closed.
