New York is one of the most diverse cities in the world, and its fashion is just as diverse as its population. There were so many different styles on the runway at this years New York Fashion Week, and designers were eager to please with a myriad of garments. Let’s take a look at the best silhouettes from NYFW.

Fitted Bustier

The fitted bustier adds sex appeal and style to any garment, which is why it was so popular at this year’s NYFW. Chromat experimented with this by simply layering their fitted top over a simple body suit, while Kendall + Kylie created an entire top, paired with straightforward joggers. Cushnie et Ochs’ bustier was embroidered with ornate detail, making it one gorgeous garment, and Ulla Johnson’s fitted top turns into a jumper, paired beautifully with puffy sleeves. Whit’s gingham dress may look very girls next door, but the fitted bustier makes it a garment for the girl in your dreams.

The sex appeal of a fitted bustier was juxtaposed with high neck lines, showing that fashion is all about extremes. High necklines are anything but rigid with Beaufille’s red dress, ideal for cocktail parties, and Elizabeth Kennedy shows some skin despite the high neckline. Monique Lhullier and Zimmermann stick to the stereotypical script that high necklines tend to follow, with long sleeves that show that modesty is definitely in fashion. Victoria Beckham pairs her high neck with blazer and slacks, transitioning this trend into more acceptable business attire.

High Waists

The ever popular high waist continued its reign at NYFW. The Michael Kors Collection displayed a high waisted bikini that was paired with a belt, and Tibi went for a loose look with a belted high waist. Carolina Herrera’s shows off some stylish and professional high-waisted pants, while A Détacher’s marbled, high-waisted pants are perfect for early morning walks along the beach. Adam Lippes’ high-waisted, denim skirt is ideal for loud concerts and late night Diner runs.

Layers

New York loved those layers this year, with designers laying garments over and under each other like winter was coming. A Détacher’s layering stands out, as it is one of the few that was not a dress, instead a skirt and double sweaters. Karen Walker layered a short, ruffled dress over a collared shirt, giving this look a punky feel. Public School threw an elegant charmeuse slip dress over a bulky sweater, making this a versatile, casual ensemble. Anna Sui’s rocker chic came threw with a peasant dress layered over a long sleeved t-shirt, and Jill Stuart’s floral dress over a lace button up is perfect for going to indie concerts.

Loose Fit

NYFW let loose this year, with ill fitting garments featured in almost every collection. Alexander Wang fashioned a baggy sweater into a stunning dress, ready for house parties and clubbing, while Marc Jacobs’ loose sweater was paired with a skirt and button up, making it ideal for presenting a thesis or studying in the library. Adam Selman and ADEAM both fashioned loose matching sets, and Adam Lippes’ sweater and pants look cozy and cute.

Sleeves with drama made their way down the runway this year, puffed and fluffed. Alena Akhmadullina’s matching button up and slacks bring a princess vibe to professional attire, and Frame’s puffy shirting is a fun way to wear a white shirt. Carolina Herrera embodies a 40’s vibe with puffed sleeves on a wrap dress, while Trina Turk’s puffy top is perfect for beach-side picnics. Zimmermann’s puffy sleeves on a short dress make this model a modern day princess.
