Trend Report: Transitional Pieces

Posted on August 28, 2017 by Molly Hannelly

As the summer dies down and we move into fall, we're left wondering will it be a cold September, and when is the optimal time to switch from the summer closet to the autumn one? Well, I'm here to tell you that some of your summer essentials are essentially already prepared for fall, so hold off on the switch and get ready for layers, because we're going to take a look at summer to fall transitory garments.

Trench Coats

A light summer sprinkle is so much more fun in a trench coat, one that rests at your thighs and ties neatly at the waist. But it's not just a summer staple, making appearances in many Fall 2017 shows. Instead of throwing a trench coat on over a pretty sun dress for a quick evening shower, like Albino Teodoro and Antonio Marras, try wearing it on a brisk September night with knee high boots and tucked trousers, out for a stroll to enjoy the crisp air and golden leaves alight in the last of the sun setting in the distance. Or, take Nehera's Resort 2018 look out to the last night at the drive in, the heat turned on and keeping you toasty. Balenciaga throws some tights on under a trench coat, perfect for bring the coat and polka dot dress into the chilly autumn.

Body Suits

Body suits are perfect for sprawling out in the summer, stretching out on a picnic table in a skirt and Moschino's pink body suit, or playing a game of soccer in some shorts and Jill Stuart's rib knit body suit. Change games for the fall and play a quick game of football in Gucci's green body suit, or throw some layers over a body suit, like Iro's, for the perfect fall festival outfit. Johnna Ortiz experiments with body suits by attaching a blouse to the base of a body suit, creating the perfect outfit for staying tucked and keeping warm.

Button ups and jeans or shorts are perfect for frolicking through flowers and moonlit trips to the beach, especially in ensembles like Emilia Wickstead's or Markus Lupfer's. Joseph's midi skirt and button up displays the perfect early September outfit, ready for chilly mornings and warm afternoons. Lengthy Cardigan

Lengthy cardigans are perfect for nights at the summer carnivals that come through town, watching the horizon on the Ferris wheel, wrapped up in Y's cardigan, or laughing on the bumper carts in Norma Kamali's dark cardigan. These light and long garments are the perfect added layer to any fall ensemble, especially paired with jeans and a tank top, such as AG's. Shaina Mote throws a long cardigan over an even longer dress, showing that fall is not just for pants, while St. John enjoys the leisurely look for lounging inside on a brisk fall day, drinking tea and listening to some vintage vinyl as the leaves fall from the trees.

Cuffed Pants

Cuffed pants are for tiptoeing through the edge of the ocean, splashing about while avoiding getting wet in Karen Walker's cuffed pants and blouse, or walking barefoot through meadows in Each x Other's pants and jacket. Milly shows how to rock summer cuffed pants in the city, but take this look into the fall with a pair of combat boots and a heavy sweater, displayed beautifully by Ace & Jig and The Great.
