A tree isn’t a Christmas Tree until it has its tinsel, and a garment isn’t wearable until it gets its trimmings. Trims, like everything else, go in and out of style. From ric-rac to fur and feathers, designers have done everything under the sun to style their garments. Let’s take a look at the top trims from this season.
Embroidery is a stunning accessory to any garment. Alena Akhmadullina’s embroidered tulle dress is a stunning show of embroidered appliques, while Antonio Marras opts for a more casual style on a sweater. Both Christian Dior’s and Oscar de la Renta’s tulle dresses look like fields of flowers to run through, and Delpozo expertly utilized embroidered appliques along the shoulders and neckline.
Create stunning ensembles with these fabrics:
In the late 19th century, early 20th century, feathers were all the rage. Plucked from a variety of birds and placed upon the garments and hats of high-society ladies, anyone who was anyone wore feathers. This trend was great for the economy, but absolutely devastating for the bird community, several of which almost went extinct. Laws were put in place, and feathers were pretty much banned from fashion. That is until the synthetic feather was created. These days, feathers appear less on hats and more as a trim on dresses, similar to Mulberry’s stunning white dress with marabou feathers on the hem and sleeves. Zuhair Murad and Johanna Ortiz each go a different way with skirts made of feathers, while Alberta Ferretti creates entire dresses made of feathers for Spring and Fall fashions.
Figure it out with feathers:
Fringe is the simple trim that can be attached to any garment and make it look elegant. Chanel’s lovely layered dress is lined with blue fringe that matches the dress, while Coach 1941 utilizes leather fringe for a leather jacket. Duru Olowu’s stunning chevron dress is accented by tiers of black fringe, and Fendi’s cape dress is made almost entirely of fringe. Norma Kamali’s series of red dresses look stunning with red fringe, which creates depth and movement perfectly.
Make it fashion with fringe:
Fur trim is warm and fashionable, absolutely stunning. Alberta Ferretti’s fur-trimmed leather cape is ideal for a galavant around the city, while Camilla Marc’s simple fur sash looks like business meets pleasure. Duru Olowu and Proenza Schouler line their coats with fur, and Red Valentino’s dress features a fur trim along the top and sleeves, a beautiful pleated gown ideal for a walk around Central Park.
Line your life with fur:
Sequins sparkle and shine, the perfect trim to make you stand out. Escada and Rodarte go all out with extensive ensembles made entirely of sequins, while Halpern’s jumpsuit features a mostly sequined ensemble with one contrasting pantleg. Gucci’s bomber jacket features lovely hearts and stars, and Ralph & Russo’s skirt and trimmed blouse utilize reversible sequins.
