In fashion (and life), expecting the unexpected is important. Knitwear is a favorite many love, but after relying on them heavily for over a year, knits are starting to seem a little worn out. Leave it to the runway designers to bring knitwear to their collections, reinventing the styles in an elegant and less tired way, full of warm wool and comfy cashmere fabrics. Now cue elevated knitwear. Keep reading to learn more about the knitwear types of the autumn and winter season.
Knits for cold weather are a no-brainer, and this year they’re even bigger than ever, coming in a wide range of silhouettes and aesthetics from western-wear to preppy. And color-blocking is still huge, so if you can’t choose one color for your next knit project, just choose both! These trends are so good you may need to try them all!
Sweaters
Key elements for sweaters this season include: dropped shoulders, oversized fits, mock necks, and cropped lengths at the hip and higher. Look for cable knitted pullovers and cardigans. For those that loved the cold shoulder- There’s the spliced shoulder. This trend comes in a few different varieties. One option is a two-piece deal—a bolero (or sweater shrug) and tank or a sweater with a cutout at the collar bone.

Vests
The trending vest is here for another round this season. Typically made with a v-neck, a new addition to this popular preppy style is the polo neck. The key details in vests this season are chunky knits, relaxed and shrunken fits. These details go well with preppy pairings like argyle prints worn alone or with layering pieces like outerwear or a blouse underneath. For a more unique vest style added a zipper for a pullover effect or deep side splits that bring the drama.

Cardigans
Cardigans are branching out this season. The fall version of the knit cardigan and bra combo has officially arrived. The cardigan pairs with a matching tank or other fitted top in varying lengths. Another cardigan option for knitwear this fall is the longline cardigan. The oversize fit of the longline option offers added warmth and coverage for chilly temps. Varying features include button closures, statement sleeves, hoods, and pockets for convenience.

Polos
Polos are another knit trend dotting wardrobes in a plethora of styles. Polo sweaters, vests, and dresses play into the preppy aesthetic that’s been taking over all of 2021 fashion. This trend presents itself as stylish and put together while being made of some of falls softest fabrics to date.

Wide Leg Trousers
By now, I know it’s obvious that knitwear doesn’t just include sweaters— they go far beyond that. Knit trousers are one of the comfiest versions of loungewear, and now it’s stylish enough to wear anywhere. Pair knit trousers with a matching cardigan or blazer for a look that is far more effortless than it looks.

With so many cozy options available for this season, I don’t know where to start. Luckily, as long as I pick from the trends above for knitwear, I’ll be utterly comfortable AND stylish, which is the ultimate goal for me these days. My days of the “beauty is pain” mantra no longer applies to fashion in my book. I can make my cake (knits) and enjoy (wear) it too. Are you loving the knitwear trends for this season?
