Now that sweatpants don’t have to be worn for extended periods and skinny jeans are out, it’s time to talk about trends for fall we can wear while we’re out. Denim, a staple, now has a few new siblings joining the category, and it’s a rather unexpected one. Let’s talk about fall’s hottest trend: Trousers!
Trousers entered women’s wardrobes when they started making their way into the workplace decades ago. Another item that has also come from business wear to more everyday wear is the blazer—The trousers esteemed partner in crime. Blazers and trousers have both gotten a more relaxed silhouette in recent years, transforming from strictly workwear to so much more.

After an extended period of wearing sweats, it seems people want the comfort of sweats, while still looking put together. I think trousers fit nicely here. I’ve already done a report dedicated to knits, which are also very trendy, but trousers are a lot more versatile than you might think, so don’t default to the knit trends just yet. Contrary to what history has taught us, trousers are made for more than just the workplace, and the runways are proof. I did previously mention that trousers are a bit more relaxed and while that’s true they are also tailored in just the right spots.
Wide and straight cuts are very popular right now, ranging in different fabrics, lengths, and even rises. The high rise is the most common right, but lower rises have already been making their appearance throughout the entirety of 2021 and will probably continue to gain popularity. There are several trouser trends, but wide-leg trousers are currently the most popular.

A high rise waist is typically paired with the trending wide-leg trousers for a bit of visual balance creating a cinched waist and a very smooth transition from the hips to the ankles and feet. The relaxed leg and tailored length and waist offer comfort and sophistication beyond compare with its ultra forgiving fit that’s suitable for a wide variety of body types. Other fabric options include denim, wool, and faux leather, but the list goes far beyond those. Each option will add a flair all its own.
Trousers are easy to pair with any proportion, from second skin tops like t-shirts, bodysuits, or turtlenecks layered with a blazer or even a chunky knit (maybe a cable knit vest). Button Downs are another sleek way to dress up trousers, and the fit of the shirt will create different styles.
