From banners to flags to costumes to luggage, when it comes to creating those built-to-last items, ripstop fabric has a history of delivering results. Developed during WWII as a replacement for silk in the production of parachutes, ripstop fabrics were made popular by their thick, reinforcing threads that make them resistant to ripping and tearing. By the late 1950s, fire and water resistant versions of ripstop fabric were also developed. These days, where the likes of tents, waterproof clothing, backpacks, kites, and workwear are concerned, the possibilities of ripstop fabric are limitless.
