From rain boots to vinyl jackets to polyurethane hoods, the origins of water-repellent fabric are as interesting as its style variations. With the invention of some of the earliest known water-repellent fabrics of the 1950s and 1960s, the desire to keep outerwear moisture-free had become a reality. But because water-resistant coatings only worked well on woven synthetic fabrics, designers were limited to items that looked more functional than fashionable. And while the invention of Gore-Tex in the 1970s gave us water-repellent activewear, the issue of style persisted. It wasn’t until the 1980s, with the appearance of hydrophobic substances like Teflon and acetone, that we could experience the luxury of water-repellent suiting and formal wear.
